just for some clarificaion , the DVD-R will write data in excess of one hour; that's just a limitation imposed by the iDVD software.. if you pay the extra money for iDVD Pro, or any other DVD authoring app, you can write as much data to the disc as it can hold...- eddie - |

I read somewhere that a DVD can hold up to 10 hours of video. That may be for double sided disks. I don't know. |

That's strange... I posted and it never showed up. Anyway, I think the new computer will be good. I have one on reserve at the local Mac dealer. They should have them in stock in two or three weeks. If you decide to go with that computer then look for them to start shipping around that time. |

I know I really really want one!!!I bought a 400mhz g4 and it does a great job on DV video. Yes, it is true that the iDVD limits you to recording 1 hour per DVD. It is written on the Apple website (www.apple.com/idvd). In the FAQ it specifies that DVD can "hold 4.7 gigs, or about 60 miniutes of high-quality video" I would speculate that this means there is a limitation in the ability to create the dual-layer video DVD's that are common in current professional releases. It could be a hardware limitation, a software limitation, or a compression limitation, I couldn't find out which. The $1,000 Apple DVD Studio Pro claims to let you create both DVD-5 and DVD-9 discs. (among lots of other cool things) It also appears to provide other compression options--such as Dolby encoding. So my guess is that it is a compression/software limitation on iDVD, but I'm not really sure. Adam |

That is what I have been told as well... The idvd software is the thing that causes the one hour limit. I guess i'll know shortly, the computer should be here in about two weeks... |
