Here's a tip for anyone using raytraced materials. I use Release 3, so it may or may not be different with other versions. For the good raytracer, download Blur's RayFX, available at www.blur.com/blurbeta .

- if using a raytrace map, open it up and go to "options". if using a raytrace material, go to the raytrace material menu and click "options".
- uncheck "anti-alias"
- go into global parameters and bring down the quad max depth. i usually go with 4 or 5
- under raytrace (map or material), instead of "background: environment", hit "specify" and leave it black.
- under "super sampling" rollout, hit "enable", and use whichever sampler you like. i go with either adaptive samplers.

all of this will combine into a much faster render, with the same quality. enabling super sampling will anti-alias your raytraces much faster than raytrace's own anti-alias. some of my renders have gone up to 35% faster with this setup. enjoy.

here's another tip, but it was so complex and long i made it a HTML file on my website. check it out at http://www.sketchsdomain.com/new/3dmaxtips.html . it deals with customizing MAX's loading process, so it uses up less memory. recommended for advanced users.
