Does anybody have a good way to make good looking muzzle flashes, that appear on camera w/o the use of real guns, and/or blanks?

Well I am not sure if you want to do this CG or NONE CG. If it's CG then try the tutorials section on my site (look at signature). If it's NOT CG then look into lyvewyer's method or try the "Physical Effects Board".

I posted a clip (check this forum on the 2nd page) of a gun flare test. I used After Effects to do it.

Are you wanting to use CG or do it physically?

Actually, DON'T use Lyvewyer's idea. I went and read it. It was pretty dangerous. His final sentance was 'Don't do this where someone is likely to call the cops.'

No offense, Lyveweyer.

On my site www.jeeroomevideo.com , I have a tutorial on how to make convincing muzzle flashes with MediaStudio Pro.

For my last mafia movie, All I did was insert white frame, added a realistic sound effect and turned out quite well!

i don't see what the big attraction is to muzzle flashes. putting some flour in a bb gun would look a whole lot more realistic, wouldn't it?

M&M, it isn't about it being realistic or not. It just makes the movie more cool.

Check some of John Woo's old Honk-Films like the Killer. With those big muzzle flashes, it wouldn't have been really good.

i know j!

but sometimes ppl go quite overboard with them?

i saw a rifle in one clip in the trailer forum had a muzzle flash with the diameter of a hula hoop.

I've found that when I do CG explosions and muzzle flashes, it seems very isolated in the frame--too surreal and fake.

I came up with the idea of using a still camera flash (using the "test" button of a separate flash rather than actually taking a picture) to simulate the light generated by these effects. Has anyone tried this already? I haven't had a chance to yet, I hope to soon.

Of course using actual blanks would be the best way... But the digital approach I use is this:

I have some frames of footage of real muzzle flashes, (there is also a plugin for After Effects called Digieffects Delerium, which has a muzzle flash) I composite these on top of the clip, using several layers, to get the right blend. I also export a couple of frames of video to photoshop, to create highlights on top of the image, so that light falls on the subjects handling the gun.

Then I overlay these highlights back in After Effects. Usually I make 1 frame really light, which is a sublter version of inserting a white frame.

A subtle lensflare can do wonders here. This way the muzzle flash does not look isolated at all.

Why not use ALAMDV - it is made to make muzzle flashes and other cinematic effect and will only cost $60
