I just got A:M 2001 (v8.6) in the mail. If anyone wants to do quality animation, I would get this! It has all of the features needed for animation and F/X. Anyone elso have it?

Wonderfully good for the price not as good as some other packages but it still beats blender and strata beyond what any words can describe.

just my two cents :

it might actually beat strata and blender BUT (and this is a BIG BUT) it isnt free!
and for beeing FREE (NO PENNY CHARGED) blender and strata REALLY ROCK. Also thereīs a new star on the sky of free soft called OpenFX an open source package. it was a commercial package a while back, but has gone open source and itīs definately one of the best FREE packages. it supports kinematics etc etc...really worth a look

I agree, if someone is is on a low budget, Strata and blender are good choices, I used them until I got A:M.

I've used A:M for a couple of years. It's a great package to learn. There's a lot you can do with it that you couldn't do for hundreds or thousands more. However, the more you want to do more complex compositions, you may find yourself hitting the wall. A couple of reasons:

1) Lack of plug-in support. Hash doesn't seem to have opened itself up to 3rd party developers much. It's not a big deal when you're experimenting or learning the basics, and AM has many standard features that are plug-ins in other packages. But, for packages like Max or LW there are hundreds of plugs for various effects or enhancements. They're not cheap, but can be really helpful in streamlining modeling of something like water surfaces or special fx.

2) My biggest beef: Poor ability to import models from other formats. I know it 'officially' has the capability, but wait till you try it. It locks up your computer for up to an hour. Again, maybe not a big deal if you're just wanting to learn the basics. But there are thousands of royalty free .3ds and .dxf models out there, and it would be great to use them as learning experiences or as parts of a composition. Once you start getting creative, you may not want to model everything from scratch.

3) A reputuation for bugs, crashes, and spotty customer service. Opinions vary widely on these things. I haven't had major problems with crashes at all, but have been very disappointed with customer relations. Your mileage may vary, so nuff said.

Don't let these issues ruin your fun playing with it though - you can crank out some amazingly cool stuff even as you first are learning the package!
