Hello all, just finished editing a test clip we shot and wanted your opinions. I know the following things need help:1) A few of the sabers are not properly sized; I was rushing to get this finished. 2) The contact flash was experimental; doesn't look good at all to me. I could use some help if anyone has suggestions. (no lens flares!) 3) Green mask around one of the actors. I think Iknow how to get rid of this. 4) Unseen (missing) saber across the canyon. I saw this, but was to weary to go back and correct it. http://users.ev1.net/~dedhorse/CanyonBattle.mov Please give me your opinions, no matter how brutal! Thanks.... |

sabers look nice...i'm taking it you get the sfx from jediknight:darkforces? ( i used something similar for my SW movie, and i wasn't that pleased. talk to schnarf, if you're interested, he has some real great ones that sound sweet.the contact flash isn't that bad. you're on the right track though...i don't think a flash would spike like that..maybe a little more circular, and you got it fine. holy crap, you're guys jump fast! might want to delay the distance shot a few secs...even in the movies they're not that fast. heheh...how'd you do the jump anyway? i know there are several ways of doing it, but i would like to hear how you did yours. anyway, i liked it. good show. Those jumps. I'm guessing you quickly switched to a still image with another still image of your guy and moved him manually while adding your own blurring. Would have looked a lot more believable if he had not gone so far so fast. At those speeds the blurring would be so extensive he would have been a hazey blob. The second one is better because he goes more straight up/down giving you less time to look at him. Just drop the speed a bit and it would be pretty cool. As for your sabers, they look flat to me. With more work on your effect it will make your whole project better. Off the top of my head, I think you should blur the white core of your sabers more. Your contact flash I didn't even notice the first time (fast, as it should be) I recommend fooling around with your radial gradient and playing with the Screen and Color Dodge modes with an almost white color.[This message has been edited by Film Boy (edited 11-05-2000).] |

It looks overall cool, but I have to agree with what some of the others have said, plus; I feel the contact flash appears a fraction of a second too early. It looks like the sabers are in contact a little bit later (or is it just that it looks like they are in contact a little bit longer?)...Regards, Rico |

Wade, U could try to use LIA for the contact falshes. Its not that bad for quick and good looking contact flashes. www.bluetemptation.com/lia (i think)Its easy to use and it has a nice tutorial. |

(I only just realised how bad my spelling was...again....after re reading that)Im personaly against throwing out trailers that arn't all that finished. But I understand how eger people are to show off their work (myslef included). Ok. What u can do is this (my 2¢)
The sabers are nice but a bit out of proportion. Try and thin the blades a bit and reduce the intencity of the white core. Thats what I liked about TMP blades, the core wasn't intence white, it was a hued colour which didn't attract too much attention. The Jump is a hard thing to get right. This I understand. But if u can find away of slowing the jump down buy adding some more frames then it will look great. At the moment its an almost instantanious thing. Sound is good in places. I can help you with this, this is my specialty. The saber sound is not all that controled for distance and this could give a nice realistic feel to the force jump if u get it right. Try and fade the sound of the blue saber exponentialy as he goes to jump as opposed to cutting it out alltogeather as he begins the jump. Also Have a bit of sabermotion sound. The only motion sound u hear is when he goes to cantact the red saber, yet he is flinging it all over the place for most of the scene. And as for the contact flashes, Try LIA. I recomend it, it will turn out a bit red, but for and outdoor scene, thats not all that bad. And don't discount lense flares. If u use the right one it can have a decent effect. If u have any more issues with sound, I can help u. its not a probelm. Drop me an Email scottjohnson@globalfreeway.com.au

Ah, yes. And as for the sabers themselves. Visit http://www.geocities.com/sithrebel/saberroto.htm and scroll to the bottom. With Darel's permission, I bundled his saber method into a photoshop actions file. |
