Hey everybody. In an effort to prove one of my friends wrong (he said this couldn't be done) I made a very brief clip proving that I could have two of myself fighting each other with light sabers. So here it is! I think it looks pretty darn good, if I do say so myself. http://www.geocities.com/ryan_wieber/clonefight.mov (1.3 MB, QuickTime. As usual with GeoCities, you'll have to take out the "http://" from the location bar for it to work.) So let me know what you all think! Oh, and if the compression for the QuickTime doesn't work for you, post and I'll try to put up the clip in another codec. |

Sweet zombie Jesus!! That was REALLY impressive. Even watching it in slow motion it looks good. The choreography is amazing (each move looks real), and those sabers look really slick. Wanna clue us in as to how you did it?[This message has been edited by Black Mantis (edited 01-26-2001).] |

Alright, to answer a few questions: First I shot myself performing both halves of the fight on MiniDV and then FireWire captured that into Premiere, choosing the best takes that matched up space-wise and time-wise. I took those shots and exported them as filmstrips (at the same length) for use in Photoshop.Over in there I overlayed one over the other. Then I would hide the layer I'm not looking at and paint the blades for the one I can see. Did that for the other layer too. So then I had 4 layers: the two shot layers and the two saber blade layers. Then I basically cut out the half of the frame that is empty on the top layer, showing down through to the one below it, with the other me. Because the dowels are covered up by the saber animation who cares if the dissapear? It was just tricky making sure that I cut out enough to see the whole me on the bottom layer and not cut off part of me from the top layer. I used a feathered angular lasso tool to cut out. Once it looked good, I fully rendered the blades, flattened and saved it as a Filmstrip and added those contact flashes (using mostly color dodging) and saved again. As for that pan, yes, I did it in post. The original shot was in the 4:3 ratio, but when I looked at the final product I saw a lot of relatively boring space above and below, so for the compressed version you saw, I made it conform to the 16:9 ratio, chopping that extra space to preserve smaller file size and because of that I had to do a little pan and scaning to keep watching the action in the second shot. Hey, thanks for the positive input! Keep it coming! |

Uh...I don't have a link, but I know I have the file somewhere. Clay Kronke, who goes to Texas A&M (I THINK), did something like that, but I think he did it almost 2 years ago (which might be the only reason why I thought it was better). I'll look for the file (on a cdr somewhere), and post it up when I find it.------------------ You play videogames all day You crave the digital ecstasy Others say you have no life ...they don't know CHV.NET-The Cyber Hippie Vision R.I.P. 1996-2001 |

that was great work. I think you did a heck of a job on that clip. Clays was pretty good, but yours is right up there with it. |

What caught my attention that lifts this test above some others was the the fact that the light on the sabers (at least when they connect) effect the backrgound. Every connect makes a flash that seems to reflect ont he background at the right places! That adds to the realism, along side good choreography.------------------ www.frank.milne.com |

Clay Kronke! He's always one step ahead!!! Hey, yeah, totally post when you find that fight. I'd love to see it.I actually could have continued this fight longer. Originally it was going to continue on with the moves from TPM for a couple more hits and then I'd make more up. But once I did the first two shots you see It had taken me forever. So I scrapped the idea of continuing it on. I had proven to my friend it could be done. Besides, I'm anxious to go onto my next saber shot: a truly realistic stabbing. Ah yes. Thanks, Frank. I spent a while practicing to get good flashes. (color dodging rocks!) [This message has been edited by Film Boy (edited 01-29-2001).] |

i give props to you, filmboy, mainly for the choreography, because that's the most difficult to get right, but the saber effects were real clean too. this marks one of the best saber films i have yet seen, mainly because it was more creative and difficult to do than the typical "playfight saber effect" movies i have seen. i look forward to seeing more stuff from you. |

Mighty nice. Great job synchronizing your movements, they worked out perfectly! The sabers look nice, as do the contact flashes and sound efects. The slight camera movement at the end also helped a ton. Great job! ------------------ Andy Holmes -artist, animator |
