why haven't they worked? did you try the method only once not knowing every thing there is to know about it and claim it doesn't work because it failed the first time?

Most of the methods you will find posted here have been used successfully in many films, some of them feature films. Some methods are tougher to get right than others, they may take some skill and experimentaion to achieve.

The first time you try to make a multiple piece mold, cast a run of successful foam latex batches, make candy glass window panes, create a 3D CGI element and composite it seamlessly into live footage, and a host of other effects can fail repeatedly until you get the hang of them.

Don't give up - pick out a method or two and experiment with them repeatedly until you start to get the kind of results that you want. If you have specific problems with a particular method, describe them clearly and in detail, and perhaps one of us can help.

Found an absolutely safe, completely easy and visually stimulating way to do body hits. Southern Ordinance... (don't know how to do a link. Maybe someone smarter than me can fix?)... makes a series of blowguns.
No, that has nothing to do with the hits.
But, for the lazy or breathing impaired, they also make... wait for it... an adaptor that takes 12g CO2 carts. The thing has o-rings, a trigger, everything. It fits into the end of the blowguns. Trust me, it's cool.
Here's what you do.
First of all, make a blood bag. I use plastic bags from the grocery, heat-sealed, with some fishtank tubing inserted and sealed into the bag. (The blood's inside already, by the way.)
Second, tape over the bag with duct tape, leaving a window for the blow-out.
Third, affix the pack to the actor, after the usual razoring of the clothing over the hit site, etc.
Fourth, hook the tubing to the CO2 device from SouOrd. You may need to use some step-down adaptors. Either that, or larger tubing. You can tape the smaller stuff to your actor. The larger stuff passes more gas to the blood bag. (Scatalogical and fart humor is OK here, isn't it?)
Fifth, roll camera. When the time comes for the hit, the actor (or FX dude) simply squeezes the trigger. CO2 races along the tubing, and the window in the bag blows out with a satisfying shower of blood. (Flesh and gory bits optional).
No squibs, no pyro, no need for lead plates and leather on the actors... nothing but safe, wonderful carnage... for the camera only.

Heh, I still have a CO2 pump for those shoes your talking about.

Does anyone have any videos of this blowgun squib in action? I think LikeAStory should have a collection of squib videos, there are not that many out there.

So if I was to get one of those airtanks from home depot what do I use as a valve to let the air out? Do I need an expensive solinoid setup?

Well does anyone know what to use to let the air out of the tank?

I would think you could just buy a valve while you're at Home Depot. Just take off the hose, tighten the valve on the outlet 'nipple', and put the hose on the valve.

I don't have an air compressor, but I'm sure that's how you would do it.

As for how to use it....you'd get all your hoses and squibs and whatnot ready. Turn the compressor on. Let it build pressure..roll cameras...action! Have a grip turn the valve real fast and let the air go! POW! You have gore.

Just make sure that your actor's reaction time is in sync w/ everything else, otherwise it will look ****ty no matter how realistec the body hit effect is.

I hope that I have helped you.

8Ride, when I picked up my tank, I got a 20 ft length of hose and an accessory pack. The accessory pack included a blower (small handheld device with a trigger), and a hose adapter for the end of the blower. Get some small, clear tubing to hook up to the adapter, and you're set!

Yes, compression hits using Eejit's techniques works well, but two things are necessary to make the system work really well. First of all, you need to have a good sound with it . It needs to sound right and be at the same time. Secondly, use some good editing. It can look incredibly cool with amazing effects. Cool, my two cents, clank, clank.

What's the best blood recipe to use for gunshot hits?

I know there are tons of them.
I haven't tried them all but the most popualar one with the corn syrup stains and seems like it would be too sticky.

Well thats good, I have a whole bunch of air compressor parts sitting in the garage. So funny enough I know exactly what your talking about. Now I just need an airtank (don't want to drag that 60 gallon tank/compressor unit around). What PSI are most hits done with?

We tried the weed sprayer, and it worked fine, but it was WAY bulky. And heavy. And hard to coordinate with the shooter. We've given some thought to having the SHOOTER control the trigger on the hit. You know, pull both triggers at the same time?
