paintball fields perhaps.

uh, you can pretty much dig down anywhere that isnt paved over, as long as you have permission to do so. i wouldnt recommend doing it in a suburban area, since there are usually lots of lines and pipes in the ground, look for large open fields, and get permission first

Say you are planting trees. Film with the trenches. Then plant. Everyone is happy.

lol, gungho, except usually you don't need to dig a trench to plant a tree.

There may be some ww1 re-enacators around where you live, check it out, find out where they er... re-enact.

thanks for the suggestions, I may have a lead at Camp Pendelton Marine base. They said they might let me use some of their trenches that they use for training

If you have the camera in the trench, instead of outside looking in, then fake it. Build the walls of the trench above ground. Make it look like boards are shoring up the sides. From a short distance crumpled up brown paper bags can be made to look like dirt. The bottom of the trenches were often covered with planks to keep the men's feet out of the mud.

thats not a bad idea but in need about 20 feet of trench with shots looking in and shots of men going over the top.
