Slow motion?

You need to shoot at a faster frame rate than you'll be playing it back at to slow down the motion.

You may be able to get a lab to print several frames for each one on the original ffotage. This is mechanical, misses some motion increments and blurring, and thus is limited in what you can do without it looking bad.

In the heyday of super 8mm film making, we would load a really fresh set of batteries into the camera to get the motor to run fast and create a mild slow motion effect.

If your original footage is shot on tape and you're going to be crash editing, you can run a good playback deck in slow motion mode with the recording deck at regular speed.

What kind of camera will you be using? I know some Super 8 cameras allow filming at a faster frame rate. What happens is you film at a higher frame rate, and when it is played back on a normal speed thats where the slow motion happens.

The username of cheap video guy says it all. Cheaply you cannot shoot slow motion on video. Hardware just isn't built that way. There's alot of techno mumbo jumbo and yadda yadda but hey. Bottom line is nope, can't shoot video in slow mo cheaply without computer enhancement. Even when using an effects prog like after effects it's not true slow motion anyway.. nowhere near as good as filmed slow motion. With that said is all lost? No.

I remember when in college I bought a cheesy video effects box from some cheesy catalogue like damark. It helped with fades and transition and some cheesaholic effects. One was called... can't remember, but what it did was create a strobeing effect like when you go to a dance club or something. Action seems to come at a slower rate because you see less of it. Kind of like blacking out every 6 frames out of 12 so you're only getting half the information in the same amount of time. It doesn't look like slow motion out of john woo... in fact it looks more like a 45 degree shutter a-la Gladiator or Saving Private Ryan and such. But it is a doable cheap stylistic effect on video. I believe I might still have that cheesy effects box.

The Videonics MX-1 will do the strobe as well. ANd it's been used in so many lower budget action movies and shows that lot's of people actually see it as slo-mo.

Otherwise spinning the jog shuttle on a good 4 head VCR can give a copy of slo-mo to edit from. (I used to teach a course on editing with a small budget before digital stuff got affrodable)

I still have decks with pretty clean jog shuttles if you want to send me a short clip to slo down email me.

Of course it will be a copy and going three generations on VHS can get hairy.

That takes me back! Doing slow mo on my old 4-head jvc. Oh was that ever awful but effective! I miss those days in a way. Again even on the fastest slow motion setting the action will seem choppy rather than the smooth graceful slow motion we see in film but that is a great alternative as opposed to the strobe effect.

When I save some money up I'm buying a Capture Card.

Whatever you do DONT just play back your 8mm deck in slow motion mode and record this onto a VHS tape. I dont want to get into specifics but I've had some horrible results with this before. Im getting emotional now I dont want to talk about it.

"The normal question...the first question is always 'Are these cannibals?'.No-they are not cannibals. Cannibilism in the true sense of the word implies an interspecies activity. These creatures cannot be considered human. They prey on humans, they do not prey on eachother. Thats the differance."

My friend, Jack, has a SONY Digital8 camcorder and when you play it back, you can use slow-motion. It looks very good.
