I'm wondering if anyone knows or has any ideas on how to build a world war 1 style helmet. Or if they know where I can get a bunch for cheap. |

probably won't find one cheap, i think they're getting harder to find. you may be able to vacuform over top of it and make a bunch that way. if you had to you could mold it and make fiberglass copies also look for costume shops that might rent them later TOm

have a look here http://www.reenactor.net in the WW1 section there is an article on making a german felt helmet. and there are links etc. for suppliers and stuff. if you want british/american/australian helmets you may be able to get away with using ww2 british helmets. Like crazy lou said you might b better off getting one of each and make fibreglass copies. Try here for a big list of militaria online http://www.militaria-online.com/ Dale Jenner

The surplus store is out of the question, I've checked all the ones in my area and most of the interenet ones. They're just to expensive to by 20 or so. How much would it run to make 20 out of fiber glass? |

you are talking about the US doughboy helmets right? the "flying saucer" type right?well, it depends on how good you are, if you're good, you could probably make 20 of them (these are just guesstimations here) with a gallon or two of resin and a couple yards of fiberglass cloth. the mold could be simple caulking silicone and plaster, latex and plaster or something more expensive. I'd ballpark it (based on the prices of materials in my area) at about $40-$50. course that is assuming you get them right on the first try and do only a layer or two of fiberglass in each helmet. There are some links on my FX page to tutorials and suppliers....theres also a basic tutorial "starting out" on the contents page that may help later TOm

nmpicts, here is a quick suggestion if your budget for this project is limited. However I'm not sure what your intentions for the scene are, so it may not apply. Simply work out how many soldiers will need helmets on screen at any one time. Find the shot in which the most helmets are needed, and you could get away with only buying/making this many. These same helmets can be used in all the rest of the scenes/shots (One thing you may have to watch with this is to keep a close eye on continuity) Like I said, if you require shots of say, a whole platoon, this idea will of courese not be practical.Good luck... nova_monkey ------------------ Don't play innocent with me Bazza; spanking! Thank's for all the Ideas, I'm going to look into the fiber glass mold a bit more, that sounds like a good idea |
