I need to make the shell of a submarine from scratch, and I don't know what to use. It doesn't have to be able to be submerged in water - just a model of a sub.
I was thinking of using balsa wood, soaking it in water, shaping it, and then letting it dry. I may still do this, but I'm exploring other options.

Basically, I want to use a material that I can shape into whatever form I want, and will dry that way. I'd also prefer it to be lightweight. If anyone knows a relatively inexpensive way of doing this, please help...

Thanks

thats all styrene, a simple sheet plastic that was vacuformed over a acrylic and bondo.

you can make a simple vacuform machine out of some cookie sheets, i do believe that FXman has a basic tutorial, if not search in here or head over to my pages for links to places that do.

as far as building a sub goes, if it has to be some really odd shape like that, making one from scratch is a good possibility, otherwise you can buy some model kits and just throw one together from the parts in them, find some basic objects of the right shape and start glueing stuff on etc.

if you need some specific info or want to know more about that just drop a line.
