Ok, here is what I was wanting to do, and was wondering if its possible. I hope I can explain this right

I'm trying to a make a futuristic weapon with LED's that indicate the ammo left. Example, a shotgun type weapon with 6 LEDs arranged so:

O O
O O
O O

Would It be possible to make them go off one by one as the trigger is pulled, then have them reset with another pull of the trigger? Or am I just a crazy dreamer?

It would be cooler if it was a green backlit LCD screen indicating the ammo left with big numbers!

You could probably do the thing with the LEDs though.

As I understand it this is what you want:

  • 1. Start with all 6 LEDs on.
  • 2. When you pull the trigger one of the LEDs goes off.
  • 3. Subsequent pulls of the trigger each turn an additional LED off.
  • 4. When all 6 LEDs are off a 7th pull of the trigger turns them all back on.

Yes, that's possible.

It will take some time to work up the circuitry, but all the parts can be bought at Radio Shack. Just guessing I would think the project would cost about $20 U.S.

yes Actor, thats exactly what I want. Do you know specifically what steps I would have to take for it to work?

Sloan: Unfourtantly, they used the numbers with the Pulse Rifles from Aliens. I wanted something different.

A circuit that counts pulses should do the trick. Voltage pulses from a momentary switch into a IC (maybe a 7490) with output leads set to short out an LED with each pulse might work. I rarely try to design circuits from scratch - I look up one that does what I need or close to it and tweak it. My electronics knowledge is rusty.

Pick up a simple circuit schematic book from Radio shack or better yet your local library before you start buying parts. Remeber, don't directly solder the leads of an IC with a AC powered soldering iron, use an IC socket and solder it.

check radio shack. they may have the right counter circuits. the connection should be circuit to battery to display back to battery. if they have a count-down counter then you can set up the same this that was used in aliens.
