Two questions:

#1 - can these be ran through a dimmer with out any negatives (aside from the color temperature)?

and

#2 - didn't someone awile back post that they had made some barn doors for these lights?

Thanks in advance

#1 Yes.

#2 I don't know. But you could certinly use some Cinefoil or black wrap to do the same thing.

As you drop the voltage the lights will become more yellow but who cares. you can compensate for this with the white balance on your camera. For some of my test projects I use simple aluminum clamp lights. The ones that cost about $5.00 at the hardware store. I just set up a few of them where needed, usually bouncing the light off of walls and ceiling rather than pointing them directly at things. If you need to control your light with barn doors then you might want to make some inexpensive stands out of pvc pipe (used for underground sprinkler systems) then tape some cardboard to them to block light from going where you don't want it to. You don't have to position the "flags" too close to the lights so there is no need to worry about catching them on fire.

Morpherguy has it right. White balance is wonderful. And the black foil is an absolute must for any film maker, no matter what budget you're working with. Another couple neat tips - the little halogen lights that you can buy for recessed fixtures and accent pieces also work really well as accent lights. Wire the fixture up with double sided tape, and you can stick them to anything. It's easy to get a great light paint in a small space with them.

Thanks for the help. I guess I'll try to scrounge up the money before I begin shooting. Thanks again.
