Hi, I'm been looking through the archives and could not find a thread on a camera boom to be put on a dolly. Anyone have any plans? ------------------ -DSS- Director, Producer, Editor, and Actor of Counter-Strike: The Movie |

try my "BTS" links page. there are a bunch of links to booms of various type and sizes. the skycrane looks darn easy to make, and could easily be mounted on a dolly, as most probably could be.there are also some tuts on making booms up there too later TOm ------------------ What everyone seems to forget is that once we look past race, religion, gender, and all that, everyone on this planet is first and foremost... ...a PERSON new and improved links(added to 02/11/01) |

I just made a crude drawing in Paint of my little boom idea. It uses a tripod. A piece of wood has a camera attachment thingie attached to it. So the piece of wood can be locked onto the tripod. On that piece of wood is the boom assembly which is shown below. Tell me what you think, suggestions, improvements and if it would work. Please note this is not meant to be a 8 foot long boom, this is for indoor shots. ------------------ -DSS- Director, Producer, Editor, and Actor of Counter-Strike: The Movie |

Not wanting to dis DSS, but counterbalance that boom. You can do it as easily as extending the boom, adding a hook to the end, and hanging a water bottle from the hook. Water is great for counterweights because you can dump it and refill it anywhere.Sarge |

i hadnt noticed any new posts in this. the basic design looks ok, but like sarge said counterweight the thing. I'm not sure what the rope wire thingy is supposed to be either, is that to keep the camera level, or to be able to tilt it? I would use a metal rods instead of dowel rods too. Email and i'll see if i still have some of the plans i sent out last time. later TOm

I meant the rope thing to tilt the camera when the boom is moved. Prehaps a metal rod would be better. Lou, do you have camera boom plans? ------------------ -DSS- Director, Producer, Editor, and Actor of Counter-Strike: The Movie |

Please, someone respond. I'm currently building and near completion of a dolly. I need to build a boom for it quick as I need to film some shots for a movie I'm working on soon. If anyone could, try to explain how I can have the camera end move (w/ a control arm) and the tripod handle goes up & down. I don't understand where the control arm would connect to on each side. Thanks!------------------ -DSS- Director, Producer, Editor, and Actor of Counter-Strike: The Movie |

have you looked through my BTS page's links to booms and homemade booms? there are a bunch of things up there. I'm not quite sure what you mean by: If anyone could, try to explain how I can have the camera end move (w/ a control arm) and the tripod handle goes up & down. I don't understand where the control arm would connect to on each side if you want the camera to be able to tilt, look at the http://www.skycrane.com page for ideas on how to do it. I still dont quite get the tripod handle thing either, maybe its me drop a line and i'll help as best i can later TOm ------------------ What everyone seems to forget is that once we look past race, religion, gender, and all that, everyone on this planet is first and foremost... ...a PERSON new and improved links(added to 02/11/01) |

Thanks for the links. I'm mainly been looking at this page: http://home.pacifier.com/~tmnathe/boom.html Instead of the whole lazy susan assembly as mentioned on the page, I'm using the tripod. ------------------ -DSS- Director, Producer, Editor, and Actor of Counter-Strike: The Movie |

Just a note about that crane design. The main boom arm and the guide arm must be parallel or the camera will not remain level.

Yea I noticed that on all the SkyCranes. I guess I'll have to change that and buy some PVC for a contol arm.------------------ -DSS- Director, Producer, Editor, and Actor of Counter-Strike: The Movie | |
