How did those filter tests come out? Good I hope I'd like to know.

Hey, Erik. It'll be nice to post on something film-related for a change (heh). I got my test footage back a couple of weeks ago but have been so busy I forgot to write you about it. Some background: I am in the middle of shooting my thesis film (for an MFA in film prod.) on Super-16. We're shooting a total of three weekends, a total of about 90 hours of location work, and about 4000' of film. The camera's an Arri SR2 Super-16. I shot 600' to test the camera and to try out filters. To be perfectly honest, none of the filters we tested blew my socks off. The 816 Skin Enhancer was nice, but several of the others seemed to only produce a kind of soft focus effect, a look that I personally can't stand. When things settle down a bit in March after the film is processed and transferred, I can send you stills of our tests if you'd like. It'd be relatively easy - I'll yank them off the tape at high resolution with the Avid.

Last weekend's shoot felt pretty good, even though it was the location from hell. But that's another story.....

Thanks for the info Pheral! It is nice to post something about film for a change isn't it? Anyway, I have to agree with you, the 816 is a nice filter, but some of those mist/fog filters can be a little much. Sometimes I like to use a low contrast or a double fog when filming because I think the Kodak Vision stocks are too "contrasty." I'd like to see those pictures when you get the chance!

Oh, and talk about a film shoot from hell! Oh my God! Just last weekend I was shooting a trailer for the MPLS/St. Paul international filmfest in a Blizzard from 4:00pm to 6:00AM! It was insane! The grip truck and all the equipment was caked in snow and it was freezing! To make matters worse, my friend drove the 1200amp genny under a bridge that was too low and TORE THE TOP OFF!!! Luckly we were done, but firetrucks and police had to be called in because it was leaking diesel fuel! what a mess! He did $40,000 in damage! Oh well, that's what insurance is for!

Whoo-eee, that's bad. I'm going to make it sound even worse. On Saturday when we were shooting it was only 70 degrees, and I had to ask my main actor to move his chair out of the direct sunlight so he wouldn't risk getting a tan and ruining my continuity.

Didn't you say you work for a rental house? Do ya'll have an A-Minima yet?

All times are ET (US)
