For low budgets, I highly recommend what I got:

Sony Digital8 TRV-310 (nice screen for price)
Pinnacle DV300 (comes w/ Adobe Premiere 5.1)

Hey Dss, I have almost the exact same setup as you!

I'd reccomend the sony TRV-310 digital 8, like dss said. It's reliable, has good picture and sound quality, and some pretty cool features.

I have the DV200, which also comes with Premiere 5.1. The capturing works great for me, but i still haven't been able to export video to tape. This may not be a software problem though. Perhaps I'm just stupid.

If anyone knows how to export to video with the DV200, though...

Don't we all. Unfortunately, you'll need to sacrafice SOMETHING, SOMEWHERE. So, if you want to sacrifice quality, it'll be cheaper, and vice versa. Truthfully, the GL-1 is the only "low end" dv camera that I've liked.

I've seen the canon optura and optura pi for about 1000. I've never actually used it, but it has a progressive scan movie mode, optical image stabilizer. A couple nice features for low budget movie making. I bought a digital8 about a year ago. it does a nice job for the price, but I find myself really wanting those features on the canon models.A gl1 is probably going to be my next camera.

why do you people always ask this? if you're considering buying a $1000 camera spend the cash, buy a mag that reviews them, then take the time to go someplace and compare them head to head, buy a tape and actually record on some on each camera, then watch the playback. Talk to the sales people, they usually know the cameras good & bad features. subject the camera to all sorts of endurance tests, like bright and dim lighting, zoom speed, test the picture stabilizers, all that kind of stuff and buy a camera that fits your style, needs, and price range.

dont ask people who you've never met on a message board, who (more then likely) didnt buy the cameras themselves what a good camera is. you may use their answers as a "starting point" read up on the others in that range then do the above.

Mr. Hutt: You probably need the latest drivers. The drivers are for both DV200/300. The have great features and fix many problems.

Big Jim Slate:

Actually, Digital8 cameras are supriorer in features and quality to some MiniDV cameras! In a large digital camcorder review in MaximumPC magazine a few months ago, they reviewed about 4 MiniDV cameras and a Digital8, and the Digital8 was the best reviewed! It made me even more happy as that Digital8 model was the same as mine! Of course any 3-chip MiniDV camera will beat a D8.
