The other way is to use an explosive squibb. It's dangerous.

The other, non-explosive and completely safe (and CHEAP!), option is a simple pull gag. Here's a wee site I did some time back explaining the basics.

I have tried just about every technique for doing realist body hits that there is and I have recently engineered a compressed air system for under $100.00 that looks like hollywood hits. Other methods I have read on here produce uncontrollable, amatuer effects at best. Garden sprayers, fire crackers etc. these methods are childs play meant for halloween houses and have little value to a serious filmmaker, remember, a low budget does not mean that it has to look that way. The system I have developed is a compressed air system with a small holding tank and a solenoid controlled blast to a blood bag that runs from a 12v DC power supply. It is a very distinct set up with a very controlable outcome (effect) this is the low budget system version of what the pros in Hollywood use......NO they don't use squibs and black powder for body hits anymore! I am currently filming a 16mm color film called The Cold Dish that has many such effects. We will have our website up and running in the next couple of months and I will show AVI files of scenes from the film that will blow you away. I will also post a free blueprint of the system I have discussed on the site. Until then.....be safe, and don't play with explosives.....play with your creativity instead.
