Has anyone heard of this camera? The Sony Handycam CCD-FX510.
I looked on their site (sonys) searched google and yahoo and found nothing. I need to know what this records in (im assuming HI-8) and its features, etc.
Searching only reveals that it works with Pinnycale (i shall never spell that correctly, i promice) video editing cards, and some jiberish. Any help tracking this thing down would be great.
Thanks.

We had an FX330 (or something like that) but got rid of it. As far as I know, the FX series was only Video 8. A lot of people have had trouble with the recording heads (the reason we got rid of it). That's all I really know.

BTW, it's Pinnicle.

K, well would 50 bucks be worth it? Also anyone have a site with some specific specs on this?

It's probably worth $50, just don't expect much. Call up or e-mail Sony tech support for the specs. If you have a good library nearby, look through back issues of Video magizenes, they usually have pretty detailed reports.

For $50 bucks just about any cameras worth it. I'd pay $50 for a VHS. My friend has a handy cam with a part number close to that, but I dont recall the exsact number, FXsomething. Anyways that was a video 8 so I'm assuming that that is the same. Talk to a tech at a video store and ask them if they know or know of anybody that would(like a service line).

I have a question about cameras. I know that this could be easily looked up on the web, and I have done so but I wanted the opinion of other people. I'm looking to buy a new camera and was wondering if a DV camera was a better buy than a regular VHS camcorder.

From what I found It is a video 8, HI-FI stereo, 10X zoom and prices ranged from $170-$420(Some had extra batteries and things). As for all the other options on the camera I did not find anything else.

Just to give you an idea of the quality of the CCD-FX series, here are two MPEG clips I shot with my FX330:

http://members.home.com/funkymunkey/Capture.m1v
http://members.home.com/funkymunkey/Janet.mpg

The first is a night shot of a duck shot when I was in Florida, note that there is not a lot of video noise. The second is a clip I shot in Black and White mode. Janet tells Meredyth that she's a bitch on this good-bye video. The sound is crappy only because of MPEG compression. I definitely think that camera is worth $50 seeing as my dad bought our FX330 new in 1996 for $500. The one problem I had with it was there was no manual focus (except, it does have a focus hold). Expect the camera to go out of focus in low light.

BTW, sorry for that "LSX encoder" on the second clip, Premiere won't let me do MPEG's, so I'm reduced to using an unregistered version of LSX encoder. If you know a good MPEG encoder, please e-mail me.
