Topic: baseball bat - head, enough said

i need some ideas on how to do a realistic bat to the head hit in one of my movies. it needs to be kind of a close up shot so camera angles are out. i was thinking of getting a wiffle bat, cutting out a section of it, and filling it with foam, then painting the whole thing to look like a real bat. but this would be sorta inconveniant for a three second shot. any help would be greatly appreciated.------------------

Okay, how about this!! REAL bat, swing, CUT. Substitute fake bat, HIT HEAD, OUCH, CUT. Replace real bat to finish "illusion" that the actor got hit with the real bat.Now then, fake bat. Block of upholstery foam "CARVED" to look like a bat. OR styrofoam carved or "other" foam of some kind that can be shaped appropriately. Quick, easy, cheap, and with a proper paint job, coupled with the movement, no one will be any the wiser. Just a quick thought about how you might pull this one off. Good luck!!! FXMan |

you may be right. I said that cause I got the idea that you wanted the person to be beaten
and bloodied by the basebal bat. Even if it's a splash of blood, it is make-up. I didn't pay as much attention to the post this time however and I screwed up. sorry |

i HAD access to a baseball bast mold, but it was broken. you, yes you can make your own if you really need to.

once again, i'm going to tell you guys (not just you but everyone) this. Go buy Thurstons James' book, or get it at the library and look through it, it answers most prop questions.

slow motion then speed it up in post. this way you can hit the actor (not enought to hurt him/her but still show that it hit) and if they recoil from getting hit a little faster then the speed you hit them at, it'll make it look much harder

Okay, what in the heck does it matter which board you post what on?? I mean when I first found this place, everything was all on one board. Computer, make-up, lighting, story ideas, you name it it was on here. I get off line for a while and when I come back people are locking threads because "this question belongs on the kalamazoo forum." Who cares??? I go to every forum! Now everyone wants to be a moderator. That's cool and i'm not blasting anyone but if they have al;ready posted a question on this, that or the other board then just let it go!

anyway that conversation had ended long before you came and posted that. Neither of us care now. The reason I usually say it should be taken to the other forum is because 1) the other forum was made for that purpose 2)there are a lot of people who don't know the difference between make-up fx and other fx. I say that so they understand. and for other reasons regarding that. I think there is something else you are pissed about critter and you are just taking it out on me and others. Go cool off and post again when your back to normal. |

how is this a makeup question, or maybe you meant it was a general discussion type question? the RESULTS of getting hit with a bat are a makeup question, but making a prop bat isnt.

If you have different forums, fine, but all i'm sayin is that if someone doesn't know about the other forums than don't lock the thread and not give them a chance to get replies. Once again, I wasn't having any malice.I just wanted my opinion. I like to think that i'm alittle better than getting "pissed" as you put it, about an internet forum. Hope you don't take this the wrong way. |

I must be losing my eyesight or something. LAte last night when I saw your post, I thought you were critter, not grifter. Sorry it just felt like it was coming on strong. No offense was taken. Very rarely does a thread get closed because of that reason. Anyways it doesn't matter. The little people on the cleaning bottles were chasing me again last night too so I didn't sleep that much. |

Hey Grifter,Well as one of the so-called "moderators" in question, the reason for the fact that there are different boards can be summed up in one simple sentence. This is DALE'S board and he can do as he wants to do. Simply put, I THINK the reason was that things get so packed and lost in one forum that he was trying (I firmly believe) to create other sections of this bulletin board to make it easier to find things of a specific nature. There weren't ANY ulterior motives other than that alone. I know that when people go away and then come back to a lot of changes, it can be harder to navigate around. But I guess that means people shouldn't ever leave here right? Kidding!! At any rate, I understand where you're coming from but you have to agree it's easier to know where to go to find the info once you've familiarized yourself with the board again after an absence. Further, and I don't mean to belabor the point, Dale asked if anyone wanted to moderate the new boards. He asked for response and then chose whom he wanted to do that. Partly Critter and I are quite a bit older than the majority of people here and we have been into these things, ROUGHLY speaking, a combined 60 years (yep you heard that right). And I guess Dale assumed we first of all had SOME level of knowledge but then also a level of maturity that HE was interested in to moderate. WE had nothing to do with being chosen. If there were someone else who wanted to do it more, I'd let Dale tell me to take a hike and he could then install whomever he wanted to. But I hope you don't think that it's a matter of wanting some kind of prestige on our part. Couldn't be farther from the truth. It's simply a desire to help people learn what little we might have to share and try to keep people from killing each other in the process or being nasty for no reasons. That's all there is to it. yeah, well thats all well and good, but that doesnt really help me solve my original problem does it? sorry if i sound rude, but i would like some advice. thanx for the stuff already posted, but i dont have a capture card, so i cant really film in slow mo and speed it up in post, and i dont want to order a book from amazon.com that probably wont make it here by the time my project it due in class.------------------
