I did a quick search and couldn't find anything about the Canon GL1 and was wondering if anyone here owns or has used it and what they thoughht of it.

Thanks,
Richard

A friend of mine actually bought one for a project he was working on and I got to be cameraman. The GL1 is a great little camera. I compared the GL1 picture to my Canon Optura picture and the the diffrence was amazing. It produces much better pictures in darker settings than single CCD digital camcorders. Also, I found when using lighting gels, it does a much better job of capturing the actual color, especially with red. Another great feature is the "Frame Movie Mode". With this feature you can produce a much more film-like appearance. But the best feature, for me anyway, is the analog "in/out" port. You can record any analog signal on to DV tape for non-linear editing. This feature means that you only really need a capture card that has a DV port, not DV and analog. Total manual controls, including a focus ring, zebra bars,
and some digital effects round out this great camera. You don't know how much I wish I could keep it for myself.

If you're interrested, my friend is selling the camera very soon to make back part of the debt he's in. He also has the Canon WD58 wide angle adapter, and extra two hour battery, and a set of three filters. He'll probably be putting it on EBAY, but Email me if you'd like further info. Thanks for the info man. I would offer to take it off your friends hands if I was looking to get it soon but I am more looking to get it maybe in May. I'm glad to hear the positive info cause all I have found are positive reviews of the camera.

Thanks,
Richard

It's only real drawback is it's lack of audio gain controlls. Also it uses something they call Pixel-shift technology. Which means they only use like 1/2 as many pixels as any other 3ccd camera, so the bottom line is it is not as sharp as other 3ccd cameras like the vx-1000. But if you are going for a "FILM look" it's a good thing. Some people say you can't even tell the difference. I think you can, but I haven't gotten to see them side-by-side.

Feederbird- Are you going by what you've heard, or what you've experienced? I also knew about the manual gain problem before using the cam, but it wasn't a problem when it came down to it. I have to say, I was using a Studio One XLR adapter, but if you're going to spend 2 grand on a camcorder, you should have an extra 150$ for the XLR adapter. It actually has great audio when combined with the Audio Technica 815B shotgun mic.

Thanks again for the extra info. I will look into that addon at the time I purchase my camera.

Thanks,

GL1 sells for about $2,000 ($2,800 retail) and the XL1 sells for about $3500 ($4,000 retail). Check around and as always, check eBay.
