I found this cheap super-directional mic but it has two settings, low and high.
On low its not sensitive enough to pick up dialogue.
Well when i put it on high, it seems to pick up everything/background -not sure if i would describe it as a humming sound...just sounds like "noise"...
well i was thinking if i took my hard earned cash and was to buy a inexpensive field mixer i could some how set the mic on high(most sensitive) and with the control dial on the mixer turn down the mic's input volume.....
not sure if that makes sense though...
help me out?

Ok, I will divulge the secret to good sound:

(1) don’t use cheap microphones
(2) don’t but cheap field mixers
(3) CLOSE UP

People think that just because they have a “shotgun” mic (from what you describe, this is not a classic K6/66 or AT835) they can use it 20 feet away. A good, short shotgun mic must be between 3-4 feet of the speaker, a long shotgun up to 6, and a cheaper mic closer. As soon as you get farther, the camera has to use gain, which just like image gain adds “grain”. Go to www.24fps.com and look at the audio section for more info.
