Does anyone know where I can find some helium balloons. I want to rig them to my camcorder and take it up. But helium is pretty expensive. Would hydrogen be better for the cost?

Ever heard of the Hindenberg?

the current theory about the hindenburg is that the explosion wasn't caused by the hydrogen gas... but because the water proofing was made of cellulose nitrate... basically wood fiber and one of the ingredients in gun powder ... also simillar to film base at the turn of the century.

Try your local party supply store... or Edmunds scientific for helium...

I heard about a student video in which the student attatched his camera to an untethered weather balloon and launched it... then after it got to a sufficient height he shot the balloon with a gun and caught the camera as it fell.

I guess this will be the Blair Witch way of film making? Put it up on a balloon and let it swing about taking shots all willy nilly? I can't imagine trying to control a shot that way. No clue what is going on behind the eye priece. Maybe rig one of those 900mghz video transmiters to a monitor so you cna view on the monitor what's happening on the cam? That's what they do for those RC helicopter shots.

The hindenberg was filled with hydrogen... but the current theory about the explosion is that the outer covering not the gas inside caused the explosion

i actually am doing this as well:
i recieved a present from my uncle this christmas which is a hot air ballon kit from the smithsonian, you build it then use a hot air ballon to fill it up and then i plan on tethering it. it probably won't be to hard to attach a camera to it. then i can get some great aerial shots

At the time we had a monopoly on helium manufacture. Just one of many secrets in our vast collection of war material.
