I know the Cinemark down by where I live (Plano, TX) is playing Toy Story 2 in digital projection (DLP). Haven't seen it though, so can't inform you on the quality. |

Sorry I didn't reply earlier. I was out for the weekend. I (among 3o other people) got into Skywalker Ranch the day after TPM came out and saw it in the digital projection theater there. Boy was it sweet. After seeing it I was so annoyed at things in regular theaters that were just not there in digital projection. Junk like film scratches, dust, that jitter that film has... Color was so great too! The motion! Boy it was awesome. I hope digital theaters pop up in more places because you all will love 'em! (on a side note that theater has the BEST sound. Everything in there is acoustically designed and, of course, had one of the best THX setups in the world.) |

Only problem with digital projection is that the imnage quality isn't nearly as good... the pictures have less resolution (by a factor of 4) and contrast... also whenever the technology changes the entire projection system must be scrapped... something that doesn't happen with film |

I heard a review of the digital projection of Phantopm Menace, and I it got panned, saying that it looked much less realistic(in reference to the cgi, which was most all of the movie) I still lke film, and I would actually miss the film grain. Theres just something about it that digital can never replace. Its cooler(not COOl, but like color temperature, etc) not so harsh as digital. Also, Im sure more people than just me have noticed (such as the guy that reviewed the digital projection) most of the movies with superfluous CGI look incredibly cheesy when theyre not in the theatre. I think the film helps largely in adding the perception of realism to computer generated characters. Just my opinion though. |

This just in: I heard that Disney's going to be releasing "Dinosaur" digitally. (Of course only to theaters that have digital projectors, the rest will be showing it regularly.)I don't know about anyone else, but I am literally counting the days until that movie comes out. It looks so awesome. [This message has been edited by Mr. Hutt (edited 02-07-2000).] |

Where I live we have one of those little artsy theaters called the County Theater and they have a digital projector. In fact they were the first to play The Last Broadcast beamed via satttleite directly to the projector. I meet the creators of the movie, they live in the area, and they said that George Lucas was furious when The Phantm Menace was not able to get the title of the first movie shown on digital projection. Beautiful quality but it is usually just enhanced from NTSC and not an actual high quality projection. The sound was really great and the lack of film scatches etc. was a bonus but film is just fair superior in quality. I hope that since the cost of diplaying a movie is much less with a digital projector that this technology might open up new doors for independent filmmakers. |
