Here's some tips in no particular order I learned while doing a war movie.1.) Use a board and a fulcrum (Spielberg did it as a kid and his war movies ruled even then) and put DRY, VERY DRY dirt on the one end. Have someone or something slam the one end down and it creates a huge cloud. Experiment with this and you can create mortar-sized safe explosions. The soldier can run by it, set it off and fly off to the side as if he was hit by it. It looks UNBELIEVABLE when combined with sound fx and it's basically free.
2.) Make an air compressor system (try http://www.exposure.co.uk/eejit/blood/index.html) for body hits. You could also use the same thing for bullet hits in the ground, but I just used fireworks. That's illegal and potentially dangerous, so only use it far from people and flammable stuff.
I forgot the third...it had something to do with gun flashes...I'll remember it eventually...if you wanna know, just ask...
