how do you make a good cheap squib?, posted by Jason S. on Saturday, 22 November 1997,

Okay for all of you who think you make your own squibs heres a lesson in them. First you can't make a squib, I can't make a squib, you can't make a squib and anybody reading this can't make a squib unless your Mr. Morris ( M.P.A). A squib will not blow a hole in walls it will not shoot blood out of
a pac and it will not blow things up! A squib is a small detonator used to set off a secondary charge like black powder or other pyro. compounds. There is only one type of squib and thats a squib!
There are alot of devices people call squibs but these devices are not squibs. And only one company in the world makes squibs and thats M.P.A. Now some may say hay what about davey fire well like I said only one company in the world, M.P.A. Now for those of you who are saying "right well then what do you call this thing I made" well is called a bomb make no mistake about it your local law
enforcement won't. And for all of you who like making up your own explosives three little letters to remember A.T.F if you do not know what these letters mean then keep using homemade explosives and the good people at the U.S Treasury department will let you know. Last time a A.T.F agent was
here at my shop he got a call from the Houston police to look into some teenagers who were making devices just like the ones alot of people here try to make. So I hope you all get this point. Now for the response on sparks try using Aluminum or magnesium 70-80 mesh this will produce sparks.

You cannot buy squibs legally without a federal pyro license, sorry.
As far as prices go, they average about $7 to $10 each, plus hazmat fees and FedEx next day air
shipping (the only way they can be shipped). All squibs are of great quality, and none are cheap.

An interesting note here:
Squibs are Electric Matches, not Bullet Hits. Mike knows this, but many of you out there may be confusing squibs with bullet hits - and thus not getting the correct answer from us. Oddly, I have not met many people who uses "squib" correctly (yes, even some pros use the name incorrectly), so I mostly presume everyone is talking about bullet hits when they say squibs.
Squibs used to be for igniting black powder, and were usually made from black powder with a bridge wire ignition. For the most part they were the old time equivalent of what we now know as the Electric Match. Back when bullet hits were first tried out, many squibs were converted to function as close to today's bullet hits as was feasibly possible.
We have come a long way - now if we could only get a bullet hit that creates an implossion we would stop having all entry wounds look like exit wounds!! Sooo Hollywood!!
