Smoke, fog, haze...what ever you call it, just don't inhale it!

Fog machines are available nowadays for a reasonable cost - often
around $100.00 or slightly more. Of course you CAN get them for
$300. - $500. if you want one. Dry ice machines are usually
home-made. Don't know of anyone who sells them. There are many
theatrical prop books around that explain how they are made.
Usually a 55 gallon or less, steel drum with a heating element and
blower arrangement. Can be made cheaply if you can "find" parts
second hand. The odd thing about smoke machines - and I'll get
blasted here on this point - is that while EVERYONE says they are
safe and have no harmful side effects of inhaling the smoke from
them, most of the bottles of fog-juice I have seen clearly state
that prolonged breathing of vapors is hazardous to some people
wiht allergies, etc. Try having asthma and being around one of
those things. I know people who have had fairly violent reactions to
them because of that. Yet everyone says they're safe. Dry ice on
the other hand IS safe and some say that the smoke hangs and
moves along the floor better. Doesn't rise as high as the smoke
machine smoke does, but is a cleaner, whiter looking fog. Just my
opinion. I have seen and used both and I really prefer the dry ice
though the other is quicker and creates more fog.

Did a show once where a fog machine was used and the fire alarm
went off in the auditorium and we had to stop and vacate the
building till the fire department came and reset the alarms. Good
thing was this stage had a fire door that could have shut the
performance down completely for that day as it takes a specialist
to reopen the fire door and in our area he was from another state.

Your choice. Just understand there is a fairly expensive cost to fog
machines but they are effective too.

Don't forget the fluid...

posted 08-12-98 09:12 PM CT (US) by Mike Walling

A smoke and fog machine are the samething, dry ice smoke or as its
called these days "low laying smoke" is mostly now days made by
using a smoke machine and a special hot smoke fluid that when
passed thru a chiller unit cools the smoke and makes it lay low to
the ground and has it starts to rise then it dissipates into the air.
A cheap smoke machine is about $100 and a unit like the F-100
runs around $1,000.
The higher watt machines put out a lot of smoke and will run
longer, but no matter what kind of machine you buy always
remember to use a good fluid in your machine like ROSCO or HIGH
END.

Hmmm... anybody try this? Sounds like a weekender to me. No pics are included so your literacy skills are put to the test!

If your looking for that little puff of smoke for a close up effect, here is a tip from one of our very own, Jeff Ferreri:

This information might prove to be just what is needed in certain situations.
Proof Positive Magic Inc. http://www.proofpositiveinc.com
makes sells a unique device called "Ultra Smoke 2000". It is aimed primarily at magicians, but has been purchased by a number of SPFX people to produce moderate puffs of smoke on command with no mess, instant repeatability, and control over the
amount of smoke produced.

(Hey, there is a little movie of the product being used at there website. Kind of neat)
