I think you can spend anywhere from $80 to $400 or more. Audio Technica makes some of the best shotgun mics, and Beyerdynamic makes a few. Try www.fullcompass.com www.zzounds.com www.8thstreetmusic.com www.musiciansfriend.com www.sixtecycle.com or www.sweetwater.com Isaiah ------------------ "I'm a failure!" I just bought the Sony ECM-MS908C Stereo Microphone about eight hours ago for my upcoming video (has been in pre-production for about six months, and filming starts in under 12 hours), and it is an amazing piece of technology. The sound is so much cleaner and crisper than the internal one on my Sony DCR-TRV8. The price is $150 Canadian. |

It isn't the microphone, it is the distance from the microphone, angle of the microphone etc.-Louis P.S. I'M NUMBER 600!!!!! |

Yes, but it's also the polar pattern of the microphone. For example, omni mics generally suck for this kind of thing. Shotguns are the best for movie dialogue.Isaiah ------------------ "I'm a failure!" "Kid, you're not failure...it's just that your ideas are silly and dumb." |

Why do mics cost so much? I mean with so many advancements in technology and manufacturing processes you'd think they wouldn't cost so much. Whenever I look at those high quality mics I get the feeling of my eyes being gouged if I ever bought one. |

It's because the best mics are hand made. You can't expect a machine to create a work of art. We're talking extreme precision, here. When you pay $30 or $40 for a mic, then you generally get what you pay for: a cheap mic - the kind that isn't made with precise care. It's an interesting thing to think about, though. Good question.Isaiah ------------------ "I'm a failure!" "Kid, you're not failure...it's just that your ideas are silly and dumb." [This message has been edited by Prism (edited 08-19-2000).] |

Just wanted to clear up some stuff about the Sony mics. The Sony 908c and the 907 are both the same mic, stereo, but are not shotgun. I have this mic and I find it to be very crisp and near noise-less, which is rare with Sony products. The HS-1 is a shotgun mic, but barely as good as a true shotgun, mono, and does have noise. It actually uses sound partly from the on-camera mic! Not good! Out of all of Sony's consumer mics, I would use the 908c. ------------------ -DSS- Director, Producer, Editor, and Actor of Counter-Strike: The Movie [This message has been edited by dss (edited 03-04-2001).] |
