Well a new version of pro tools from digi-design is comming out soon and they are giving away a free version on their website to anyone starting in just 7 days. Go to www.digidesign.com and soon you too can have it. I have worked with the pro-tools line before (by digi-design, a division of Avid) and it is AWESOME!!! It was always just too much money for me though. So ANYONE who has the SMALLEST interest in sound needs to get this. It is FAR better than gold wave and even sound forge. HMMMMM this sounds a lot like an ad, I'm sorry. But you realy have to take advantage of this. once again that's www.digidesign.com

Sound Forge is a fine program, but Pro Tools is a step up to an application commonly used in the industry. I'm doing post sound design for a film with it right now.

Sound forge is awesome. But yeah, ProTools is pretty much standard as far as professional digital audio. If you haven't already heard, after I buy my new drums, I'm looking into getting a digi001 which is there entry level home studio kit (comes w/soundcard and outboard interface) It's really sweet.

How can you possibly get this program for free? Sounds too good to be true. Is it shareware, freeware, demo or what? I hate to get those neutered programs with the save feature disabled because you can't see if it will mesh up with the software you are working with until you import something. I hope you are right and it is free. I'll be in line. I do go to software seminars alot and do get alot of software for free. (Windows ME, System Commander, Internet cleanup, etc) So it could happen.... I will be waiting......

I asked an engineer friend of mine who deals a lot with Pro Tools systems about this "free" version of the software, and he said that Digidesign has done this before. Pro Tools is up to version 5.1 right now, and he thinks it's likely that they'll be offering an earlier version, maybe Ver. 4.0, and that it should be fully functional for the most part. It may not include all the bells and whistles, and not having the hardware, I/Os, etc., that come with the package nornally will be limiting, but even to have the application will be great. The neat thing is that if you have an ambition to get into sound design in any form, it'll be a great way to have access to a program that is used extensively in the industry.

Actually the free version is 5.01 It's a chopped down version but it will still be an amazing piece of software, especially for free. And all the necessary functions (saving etc.) will be enabled. It's not the newest 5.1, but 5.01 is pretty darn close. It's like the version people paid 600 for a year ago. Once again, the site is www.digidesign.com if you want more info. I think there are now only 7 days left to wait!!!

Yeah.. it was supposed to be available for downloading several days ago and then suddenly the "free" page disappeared and the server went down temporarily. Weird.

Just out of curiosity, what is it you guys are expecting a stripped down version of Protools will do for you that a million other (and, IMHO) softwares wouldn't do? I've owned a couple of Protools rigs, and worked on a bunch. I personally can't stand its UI. It's really an overhyped setup...

Yeah but i could name a quite few people that pretty much worship it too. It's got multitrack recording and advanced wave editing. I could get the same function from cakewalk and sound forge. But that would cost more. I'll just have to wait and see. Since i wont spend a dime to DL it, it's definately not gonna hurt even if i do decide that i don't like it.

Well, i know nothing of sound editing software, but I've been doing all my editing on the windows sound recorder (which is surprisingly useful), so anything new to me is good.

I edit all my cartoon sounds on there, I don't like the sound editing stuff on premiere. I've also edited a few songs together. Pretty basic stuff, no effects. Just changing volume levels and splicing. If you want to see my first cartoon, it's at www.painfulenergy.com/lon.html

the mic I used wasn't the greatest, but it gets the job done. I love the cartoon, though.

Pro tools won't work with windows 2000. I haven't the slightest idea why they made it this way. I would think anyone windows user seriously considering buying their product would be using NT. The program is unfortunately no use to me either.

Yeah, 95 still.. And Linux. There's no point in upgrading to 98. All that 98 is, is a freakin' bug fix (even though it crashes just as often)
Windows 95 has served me well. The only reason I'd ever get 98 or NT is so that I might run some of the new software that doesn't run on the "old" Windows 95.
At this point, an "upgrade" to 98 is becoming a little more appealing since my dumb CD-ROM isn't running in 32-bit mode, and thus Windows doesn't even really recognize it as a CDROM drive. I hate Windows.

If money were no object, I might get a Mac. Until then, I'm stickin' to my homebrew PCs.
And that new OS X looks righteous. It's UNIX for the Mac, you know. I bet it kicks.

I just bought a computer that came with Windows Me, and man... this version really sucks. I just hate the reappearing folders like "my pictures" "my videos" blah blah and they always come back. if anyone know how to get rid of these things, please let me know. Also, if you don't go to a shortuct for a while, it starts to "hid" them. Yeah, that's what I've been missing. Hidden shortcuts. Good thinking, microsoft.

I know this is nitpicking, but I wish I knew of an OS that let you customize it all.

Oh, and of course Me doesn't translate all the software that runs on 98 and 2000. Of course.

Besides being an aspiring film maker, I am also a musician. I use a multitrack program called n-track, which costs $39 for the registered version.

In a word, it is simply amazing. Number of tracks and effects processing (supports VST and DirectX) is only limited by your processor and hard drive specs and the program offers a tremendous amount of functionality. The whole philospophy behind it's creation was, I believe, that quality, "professional" level software doesn't have to cost thousands of dollars.

It also has some limited video functions, including syncing a video file to playback of the audio/MIDI tracks, and is capable of acting as a MIDI slave or master.

I've used the program extensively for recording and have found it to be capable and easy to use. It's only real weakness is it's MIDI song editor, but that's a minor quibble when compared to everything it gives you.

--- After reading over the above, I realzied it might sound TOO enthusiastic, so, just a note... I am not affiliated in any way with the author of the software. I just use it and like it.

Check it out at http://www.fasoft.com

P.S. One thing to be aware of is that the program generally works more efficiently under Windows NT than 98 or 95.

I have used Sound Forge alot! And it's a great "sound recording" and editing tool. But recently we tested Sonic Foundry Vegas Video 2.0. AND IT'S AWSOME!!!!! Multiple Track syncronizing with video. It really kicks! From now on all sound editing will be done using Sond Forge; and Vegas Video to syncronize it whith the video. You are in absolute control.

i guess Cakewalk is a step below all this stuff? i have a friend who dealt extensively with "proffessional" audio and video, and he worshiped Cakewalk and Premiere. Based on what i've heard about both, was he just uninformed of other programs that are better?

I just got Cakewalk with my sound card, is it worth loading on my computer? I've also got Sound Forge 4.5 and Premiere, do I need Pro Tools and Cakewalk for anything?
