I'm sick of crappy headphones so I'm going to buy a new pair. Could someone tell me of any high-quality/inexpensive headphones? I'll be using them for a lot of different applications. I'm not sure how much I should spend since there is a wide price range.

Good brands:

Sennheiser
AKG
Sony
Nady

I own a pair of Nady headphones. (The "big" kind) and they work great.
You want some good phones that are comfortable, have wide, flat response, and it helps if they look cool on you, too.
Look for all those things within those brands I mentioned. Check www.musiciansfriend.com

I would've liked to have spent $60 or so, but I got mine on sale for $20. How important are these headphones to you? Chances are, a nice semi-expensive ($40-$80) AKG pair is gonna give you superb sound, so if you've got the funds, go for the best you can get.

I have bought 2 pairs of $20 koss headphones and both have broken within a month or so of their purchase. Now, in what I do (composing music), it is crucial to hear every little thing that happens with every voice. So, I went to best buy one day, and looked at their selection. there was a pair of $100 headphones (which my composition teacher has had me use while studying scores) which are the BOMB. now, I also realize that people arent millionares, and nor am I. SO, I went a step down to a pair of $30 headphones with a long thick chord. I bought an Aiwa stereo dynamic headphones HP-X222, and I highly recomend it to anyone that needs to hear alot, but isnt a millionare. Give it a try. I think you'll like it

Hate to burst your bubble, but Koss, Aiwa, Panasonic - those brands are all cheapo junk.
You coulda gotten some nice AKGs for that price. But anyway... you probably got an OK pair. I'll shut up.

the $100 pair that I mentioned earlier's audio is so sharp that you can hear the quiet flick of a piano key, the preformer's clothing rubbing against itself, the preformer breathing, the small creak of the piano bench and EVERYTHING. even sounds you didnt even know existed.

The $30 pair that I have is just a small step down from that. you can hear the small flick of an oboe key as the preformer pushes and releases it, etc. its a good investment.

Try not to judge your headphones on how small of a sound you can hear. Are they responsive? Do they handle high dB levels without distortion? The flatter the response, the better.. you don't want headphones that accentuate certain frequencies (Yes, that means that just because your headphones can really kick out the bass, they may still be lacking some important definition.)

Oh and I just found out that my $20 pair was normally $50.. I got a darn good deal, eh?
