well...lets consider the following;

When a heavy piece of meatal hits someone in the face, it will make 2 main sounds: one, bones crushing, teeth cracking, cartilage snapping in the nose, striking of the cranium, etc. I would recomend recording the sound of a shovel hitting small pebbles, and possibly carrots breaking. Two, there would be a watery type of sound because the mouth contains salivary glands, and cartilage when breaking makes a fresh snap. I would recomend for this beating a head of leattus or cabbage to death with a shovel, then mixing it with the other sounds. Also, you'll need to capture a slight ringing of the shovel, because when it vibrates, it produces a moderatly steady tone. and then add little things like the small woosh of the air as the shovel swings forcefully through the air.

this is just if it hits the face. if it hits the back of the head, there may be a slight crack, but not as much as a thump and the sound of the shovel ringing.

Ahh yes..but I think it is better to use various different tools so that you may slightly alter the sound by adding or subtracting tools to best fit the sound you are looking for. if you use just one...it is harder to do that

but a cantelope with some other things (like yogurt [eww..what a sound that would make!]) would be cool.

try a turkey or chicken. pu tit on the ground, or set it up as a piniata ( did i spell that right?)
have your mic standing by, and just give it a good smash. bones, cartlidge, flesh, you'll get everything.

1) don't try using live animals for this.
2) dispose of the carcass properly.

if anyone wants to know, that's how they do the sound fx for ER during an operation with all the squishy stuff. dug aroud inside a turkey.
