I believe this is about the best site for sound effects on the web. You can't browse - only search, but as near as I can figure there are about 1300 effects here. Preview them as RMs and then download them as MP3s. There are a lot of great effects here, many that would be impossible to record on one's own.

Oh, and its multi-lingual.

ML&M - If you are looking for a really expanisve amount of various sound fx, then try obtaining a sound fx cd. I got one from radio shack that cost me $9. It had over 6000 royalty-free sound fx. Alot of them need minor editing to suit your needs, but then again, I guess every sound effect you find would anyway. There are other cds like this as well. They come with a search engine built in, so you can quickly find the ones you need.

Im looking for a whoosh type sound, the kind of thing youd hear in a john woo film, where people spin around etc. Anyone know where I could find one (tried Ljudo but wasnt sure what to look up)

A whoosh? OK, how about this. If you take a garden hose and whip it around in a circle it will make a good whoosh sound. If the pitch is too high, you can lower it in some sound programs such as Sound Forge. Sound Forge is incredible. You can take a common sound and modify it into something really different.

MAKE THEM!!!
Get a sound editor like Sound Forge or even something like Cakewalk and MAKE YOUR OWN!
Record a "swoosh" with a stick flying by the mic and process it, edit it, add more "swoosh" sounds. Almost all sounds sound REALLY good when done like this!

MLM - You too? Tha's exactly how I got mine. I snagged the last one on the rack. I think they just put one out at a time, so that it seems like a hot item, and everyone buys it. lol.
There is a ton on there indeed. So long as you figure out how to use its search engine, finding what you want is fairly easy. Most of them have to be edited, but so does any sound effect.

Radio Shack offers a few of these cd's, but you can find them anywhere. Kmart sells simialr things, so does walmart. A very good place to find these kinds of cd's, are theatrical supply companies. They very often sell sound fx cd's.

*A note to all of you* - These CD's can be good if you are in a jam, and provide alot of good sounds. But the best way to get EXACTLY what you are looking for, it to make and record them yourself whenever possible. They will come out so much better, and besides, you will have more fun doing them that way. Foley work is very fun, and educational (and gives you the best results).
