i don't have an xlr output on my trv900, so how would i hook up a boom mic. Shoud i just get a whole separate audio recording device and then hook up the boom mics to that or what

well, firstly, anything mic wise on your cam would have to be input, otherwise since most likely you have a mini input, best way to go is to get a nice mixer (preferably portable) and connect the xlr mics to that and then run it to the camera for recording.
