alrighty, i've got a mic that terminates with a mini. i wanna run this to a mixer, so i'm asking what's the best way to connect. i can either attach it to a coupler and an extending mini cable, than convert to a quarter and plug into the mixer. Or i can immediately convert the mini to a quarter, and then from that convert from quarter to xlr. then from that, use an xlr extension into the mixer.I know that's a lot of converting crap but just wondering what was better. i can't imagine the audio quality would be too great after transferring through a long mini cable. Any info would be greatly appreciated, thanks |

I'm in no way a sound expert but rul;e of thumb says the longer the link between source and recording device creates more entropy. I'd rather convert to a quarter then plug it right into the mixer myself. I've used a cable in cases where I needed more length between the mic and the camera (to cut back on noise) but the sound quality was noticably damaged requireing me to tweak the gain and a little post cleaning up in sound forge.------------------ www.frank.milne.com |

actually, i was referring to the two choices of either converting to use an xlr extension, or should i use a coupler, mini extension, and convert to quarter to input to the mixer. either way im gonna be going to quarter, but what should i use as extension xlr mini or i guess quarter would work too.I'm just really wondering if converting from mini to quarter to xlr is gonna be any good anyway. Thanks again |

Your best bet would probably to go to XLR for the extention, since it's shielded and balanced. Although seeing as how it's kind of jimmy-rigged, you won't get the full low-impedance advantages as you would if you were using all XLR.Isaiah ------------------ Isaiah, "I'm too young to be cool" Eyre http://www.iEyre.com | |
