Do they really use a orchestra for the background music in cartoons or is it something else? A program or synthesizer?

Depends;

looneytoons - orchestrated

Cartoons on Nickelodeon are usually electronic scores

Cartoons on the WB are usually Orchestrated. Weird, eh?

That's what I like about WB ... they have orchestrated music! While other cartoons (not necessarily cheap or stupid, mind you) are using synthesized music, WB has these great performances by a real orchestra. I like the old-fashioned way best.

You can buy CDs of music from the old WB cartoons, and I agree with you guys - its wonderful music. When you listen to it, though, it feels a bit odd without the context of the visuals in front of you. Its still wonderfull, just different.
