How do I go about doing it. Do I have to copyright the lyrics, the notes, AND the final recording. What order do I have to do things in. Last night I wrote a song that I really want to use in my film and I don't want it to fall into public domain like Night Of The Living Dead movie did. If you don't know what I mean don't worry.

Anyway. If anybody has ANY info. Give it to me with EVERY detail. I MUST HAVE THE INFO AND I MUST GET THIS DONE CORRECTLY.

I have finally written a song that is worthy to be released.

I NEED YOUR HELP!!!

I will return the favor with any information I have on a certain subject.

If you've got sheet music which includes the lyrics, send a copy of it and a copyright form, and I think a $20 fee. You can probably ask for a form from the U.S. Patent & Copyright Office:
http://www.loc.gov/copyright/

Actually, everyone has a right to their own work. What an "official" copyright does is it get the gov't on your side, so if some punk tries to steal your stuff, you can get lots of money by using your copyright lawyer.

If you have a recording, you'll probably have to copyright it seperately, but if you already have the music copyrighted, people would have to ask your permission if they wanted to do a cover of it anyway... but I'd go ahead and protect both things. It might pay off someday.

I beleive you CAn copyright music if you only have an audio tape of it. Lots of folks can play music by ear but cannot notate it on staff paper. So the LOC will accept a tape as I recall. You can get the forms from them and maybe even now you can print them off the Internet. Don't know for sure. But there are numerous forms for copyrighting various things - you just have to get the right one. But it's easy to do and the cost is minimal to protect your stuff. Good for you.

I think he's happy....

Anyhow, I e-mailed a lady at the copyright site and she e-mailed back saying that the exact moment you've done something you own the rights to it, you have copyright on it all you need to add is (c) and the year and it's yours, the only reason you register it is so they can back you up if it's ever copied that's it. And believe you me, the (c) scares people off REAL easy.
