I have been looking at both of these mikes and I was wondering which would be better for recording dialouge with. I know that the ATR-25 is stero and the ATR-55 is mono, so which would be best if I used it on a boom? I just hope I get enough info before this place goes down .-Jamaal www.jackassery.com |

If it's a shotgun, which is mainly for isolating dialogue, mono is fine. If you want to be recording ambient sounds later, I'd suggest a cardioid stereo mic.Isaiah ------------------ Isaiah Eyre, Sound Guy Sun, sun, sun, here it comes. - The Beatles <Begin Shameless Self-Plug> Visit iEyre.com! </End Shamless Self-Plug> |

Here are the different specs on each: http://www.audio-technica.com/guide/line/atr/ATR55.html http://www.audio-technica.com/guide/line/atr/ATR25.htmlBTW what's unidirectional and dual unidirectional mean? [This message has been edited by jackass (edited 02-28-2001).] |

The dual unidirectional refers to the mic's stereo (dual) elements. In such a confined polar pattern, I tend to think that stereo would be kind of pointless. I'd go with the ATR55.Isaiah ------------------ Isaiah Eyre, Sound Guy Sun, sun, sun, here it comes. - The Beatles <Begin Shameless Self-Plug> Visit iEyre.com! </End Shamless Self-Plug> |

I'd watch out if I were you. The ATR55 has a lot of noise. I recently used one and the audio was terrible. It also has some incompatibility problems with some firewire capture boards. After calling Audio Technica, they would not let me return it and they even called it cheapo quality. Of course that pissed me off as I spent around $50 on that mic. I'm moving to an XLR solution w/ a Studio 1 XLR-PRO adapter and most probably an Audio Technica AT835b Shotgun mic ($240). Though Audio Technica has very high quality mics, their "consumer" mics are nothing to call home about Though the ATR 25 is not a shotgun mic, it sure looks like a higher quality mic based on it specs. It has higher quality parts and a lower impedance (the more impedance, the quality degrades) than the ATR 55. If I had a choice between the two, I would probably get the ATR 25 which could be easily mounted on a pole for boom use. Though not as directional, it should be adequate. One side note, on eBay there is a guy who sells a custom made boom that he made which looks great and has an instant buy price of $50, which is great for low budgets. I just bought one and awaiting its delivery. ------------------ -DSS- Director, Producer, Editor, and Actor of Counter-Strike: The Movie [This message has been edited by dss (edited 03-01-2001).] |

Hi, A shotgun mic is very directional mic that blocks out sound that is not in front of the mic. It is used most commonly for dialouge. ------------------ -DSS- Director, Producer, Editor, and Actor of Counter-Strike: The Movie |
