There are bunches of people from the United Kingdom here on the board. (I myself am not) but anyway. Corn syrup is just used as a thickener for the blood recipes. Honey, Hair gel, Maple Syrup, or any number of substitutes may be used for Blood. Just about everybody agrees that a good blood recipe it the base thick liquid, thinned down with water to the viscosity that you want, with red food coloring, and a touch of blue coloring to make pools of blood darker and more opaque. I use Corn syrup Red, Blue, and a bit of Chocolate syrup. Can't really give you a recipe, I just make it up as I go each time. (Mix it till it looks good.)See Ya JB (oops, well this was a lot longer than I ment to post) |

How 'bout this for ingenuity (sp?). Had a scene with blood all over a person's head. Actor didn't want 'icky and sticky' corn syrup in their hair. I went into the bathroom and found Nutragena hair gel, it was clear and thick. Put the food coloring in and then put it in the hair. Washed out quickly (although for blonde hair it might turn a bit red, I dunno) and left a nice Hi-Pro Glo shine when washed. Any clear liquid with a thick viscus (there's that damn spelling again) can be used.Jm |

Maple syrup and honey do not really work. Look for a product called GOLDEN SYRUP. I don't think you understand the properties of blood jbell. This is not meant to be an attack. You can not just thin it down with water. Trust me I have tried. It may look more opaque on screen but STILL looks watery. There is only so much water you can add before it looks cheasy. That is why I add zinc oxide and vodka ot mine. Mixing it till it looks good is also not good. I have also learned this the hard way. It DOES need to be measured. And it shouldn't be that dark either. You do need to add yellow. My recipe is posted on gnewbee's page. I just updated it and am not sure if he has updated his page yet though. It is still pretty close(except I do use zinc oxide and I use vodka in place of photo-flo). |

For the cut.. I have been trying to get a product called FX GEL from mehron to experiment with(they have they're own website. Just do a search on mehron). What you do is heat the stuff up, put it on the skin, let it cool then you can cut it or mold it any way you want. I may be getting some today. What you could do is put some of this on the area. Have a DULLED knife with a blood filled pippette on one side. Cut into the gel(with the pippette side facing awy from the audience/camera) and squeeze the bulb as you cut to make it bleed. Hope this helps, I will try it myself as soon as I can. |

Gore master:I got some of the FX Gel (Flesh Effects from the Ben Nye co.) and I'm not all that pleased with it. You are supposed to put it on the skin and be able to cut into it, but it does not 'act' like skin. The stuff is so sticky that it sticks to the skin and when you cut it the stuff sort of rips in the middle instead of looking like a cut. The gel is also a bit hard to work with, it sticks to EVERYTHING as you can imagine. I guess you can expiriment with it (I still am) but other things would work better than this quick fix. I did find one good use for the gel though. I had to built up a hole in a neck that has a chunk taken out and I didn't want to layer raw latex. I put the outline of the hole (a small creater) and then put some thick fake blood (undiluted corn syrup) in the creater. I next covered it with a small piece of syran wrap so it wouldn't leak. I then covered all of this with a few coats of latex with a string under the syran wrap. When I yanked the fishing line string the latex and plastic was pulled off revealing a flesh colored hole that drips blood. You must use the syran wrap though, or the liquid latex will turn pink instead of flesh colored. P.S. if you get any more use out of this FXGel stuff, please, email me. jdm001@earthlink.net Jm |

I bought some of the SAME stuff today. What you do it put it in hot water until it becomes a liquid. Then you can apply it to the skin. You can spread/blend with a brush or your fingers. Then LET IT COOL(probably one mistake you made). When it is cooled POWDER IT. Do this so all of the gel is powdered, It will begin to look like your skin. Then cut into it. When applying it build it up in layers. When I cut it I found it to be VERY life like and the cut looked realistic. I know because I compared it to some REAL razor cuts. |

The way the gel acts(and sticks) is due to humidity in the area at that time. It works best on a cool, dry day. That is when I try to work with it. It makes life a bit more easy. |

I let it dry, but didn't layer it much when I tried to cut it (I did layer it for the neck though). What powder did you use, talc?Oh, quick tip. I found if you want to heat it up quickly you can put the gel in the microwave (take off the cap) for about 6-10 seconds. It will be liquid, and will be hot, let it sit a minute before applying to skin. The bottle I had kept getting the water in to the gel when it turned to liquid, so I use the microwave when I'm in a hurry. This isn't the way you're supposed to heat the gel (it gets hotter than the water, so if you put it in too long I'm sure it could burn) so I don't suggest this method all the time, just when in a hurry --or you have a leaky bottle. DO NOT USE IN MICROWAVE. I think I should remind you to always read the instructions first. If you take the cap off, put it on tight. that way you will not get water in it. I never had the problem. You canuse talc to powder it I suppose. Do you have a make-up kit? I fyou are a make-up artist you should have powder for make-up(an essential for grease paint). I fmake-up is not your thing, and you are just doing it because there is no one else who will I can understand. |
