Hi, I'm wondering if anyone knows how to do an effective nosebleed- it's easy enough to just put some blood under the nostril and call it a day, but for the particular shot I think some dripping would be much more effective...any thoughts?

If you are filming from the side maybe you could run a small tube to the opposite side of the actors nose and put blood through that. If your filming from the front maybe a piece of foam soaked in fake blood and put up their nostril (YEK!!) would work.
Or of corse you could just punch them in the nose real good.

Here are some ideas for a NoseBleed scene.

What you would do is have a shot of the character with no blood on his face then another shot at something else(dont ask i dont know what). Then apply a small bit of blood under the nostril, to make it look like its just starting to drip. Then have the actor hold a sponge with blood or a blood bag. Then have the next shot point at the actor again, thus showing the small blood coming form the nose. then have the actor put his hand over his nose and appropriatly squeeze the blood bag or sponge so it looks like blood is dripping.

Well I went back to Pulp Fiction because there's a pretty good scene where Uma get's a bloody nose. You could start like they did by showing the person grubbing and gripping at there nose franticly, then cut to a closer face shot where we can see the blood is on their face, lips, and hands. ( in the movie I bet they either just applied it during the cut, or when she's rubbing at her nose she could be squeezing like a wad of soaked blood in her nostril ) either way would make it look really good. I thought it was believable.

If I remember correctly, in Goodfellas, in the scene where Ray Liotta bashes the hell out of that guys nose with the butt of his gun, the gun itself contained a sack of blood, so when Liotta faked a hit with the gun, he'd squeeze it and blood would come out, over the guys nose. The camera was positioned so you couldn't see the squirt. Simple but effective.
Oh, and Videoman, I tend to agree about just hitting them in the nose. On my current project, some of my actors are really starting to s**t me.
