What is the stuff that you spray in an actor's eyes to make tears, and where can I get it?

Typically people use glycerin to simulate tears. You don't spray it into someones eyes though. You put some in an eye dropper and squirt it at the corner of the actors eye(s). Don't get it in their eyes!! Glycerin is a thick clear liquid that can be purchased at any grocery store of pharmacy. It is in the medicine section. A small 4 ounce bottle will cost you a few dollars. James http://members.aol.com/paganini99

Why don't you use onion extract? You can get the juice out of onions and rub it on the skin of the actor around the nose. The actor's body reaction will be to cry. DO NOT PUT THE ONION JUICE NEAR THE EYES, IT IS ONLY NEEDED NEAR THE NOSE.[This message has been edited by Helix777 (edited 01-23-99).]

Something intended to be used for cooking is not allways safe to be put in the eyes. When dealing with something as sensative as the eyes, only use safe materials. You don't want to be paying your actor for the rest of their life for blinding them.Rex Winfrey

Wouldn't just having them cry be the best? Many people can start crying no problem. Or I can refer to the Drew Barrymore / Wes Craven way of going at it. Though it's a bit crude.

I'm just tossing ideas here, but you could try some eyedrops(one word or two??). Not sure if it will make "Tears", but it should make the person look ready to cry. With eyedrops in the eyes and glycerin around them, it would look very good. But, try to get the actor to cry first, it is the best and you do not have to mess with this stuff. Anyway, it is just an idea. Good luck.

You can buy what is known in the biz as a tear-blower. It can be order from Namies in L.A. it has Menthol crystals in it. You cover one end with a piece of nylon to keep the particals from getting in the actors eyes. Then you hold it close to the eye more at the bottom and blow gently into it just before the shot. This will make them cry. It helps if the actor is coached before hand about something that gets them emotional, maybe a death in the family etc... then use the tear-blower. Good Luck P.S. you can also use the glycerin for added effect, just don't get it in the eyes at all it is very painful...[This message has been edited by planetfx (edited 01-26-99).]
