Ok first of all I live in the country that is next to a hick town. I just started writing a movie and i am going to ask questions as i go. 1) guns---can real guns also fire blanks? i have heard yes and no from ppl i know and i want to get this straight. Also are blanks made for shotguns? 2)I am doing a wound where the leg has been grazed by a 9mm how would i do the flesh opening? 3) how would i simulate red heat on a knife blade? it is to cautorize (did i spell that right? i dont think so) the wound mentioned above. 4)if i were to make a life sized window outta fake glass to jump through, what kind of wood should i use for the frame? Balsa wood? 5)i also want to blow up a model with a flame shooting through the middle what is the best way to go about this? I dont have a computer editor so......... And i know about the dangers and legalities of pyro so suggestions please.thanks for the help sorry so much to ask. =P |

1) Normal guns can fire blanks but i think you need a blank adapter (this maybe only for auto and semi autos, you would have to ask someone who knows more) the army use them for manouvers and there is also a type made for use in movies.

Revolvers and shot guns will fire blanks... for any kind of automatic weapon you have to modify the weapon... from a little machining and a barrel adaptor to complete reworking, depending on the weapon... DO NOT do it your self!!! DO NOT make "Blanks" yourself, they can kill!!!!!! (Brandon Lee, John Eric Hexum)Play safe, Nick (909) 823-CINE |

I agree with Stuntman about home-made blainks, but Brandon Lee's death was just because people got careless. And to make blanks you would be the same way. I did this once on my first movie, and the first one went "BAM" as I took the cap off. Prying off the "Lead" cap of a bullet makes the powder VERY HOT. I was lucky; the cap went flying two inches from my face. I had mild burns on my face. I ran my ass down to the gun shop and got real blanks. |

If anyone knows where to get the adapter I would love to know. I really do not want the barrel on my handgun weld and modifeied but if there is an adapter, that would very cool.I could never find a gun shop that sold blanks. Could someone tell me where to purchase blanks for a revolver or shotgun? I would be indebted to you |

The model to be blown up, Is it an exterior shot or a flame inside a building???Because flames etc have a tendancy to go up, you might want your model on its side with the camera faced down so that you get the flame coming towards the lens. materials, petrol(gasoline) is good for a ball of flame if you can ignite it all in one go. I once used a large been tin with a bag of petrol inside, this was ignited with a stage flash pot which looked great. You might have to experiment with the amount of gas. may the force be with you. ps.Its an idea to have the camera behind a sheet of perspex or something or it might just be toasted. Trust me on this one. |

Jack The Ripper, check out the site http://www.iar-arms.com/ They have tons of blank firing guns and ammo, even for shotguns. They also have 100% safe blank firing guns that were made specially to fire blanks so their barrels are solid. They couldn't fire live ammo even if you wanted to. Because of how safe these guns are they are used for suicide scenes in movies, at least that's what I've been told. But if you don't want agun they still hgave plenty of ammo. Check it out.-Kavan |

John Eric Hexum (spelling?) was an actor on a show called "Voyagers", then "Models,Inc".... on the show he was messing around with a prop gun (spell that REAL GUN) and put it up to his head saying, "I wonder if there's one for me?" he pulled the trigger and a blank blew the side of his skull through his brain... Brandon was killed to save a few dollars on set... the prop person was handeling the weapons, the weapon guy was released for the day, and they wanted to see bullets in the chamber... the prop person purchased live rounds and pulled off the slug, dumping out the gunpowder, and replaced the slug over a hot primer... they figure an extra must have pulled the trigger, forcing the slug into the barrel... later that day, without checking to see if the barrel was clear, full load blanks were put into the gun.... the blank fired the slug into Brandon.... the gun should have never even been pointed directly at anyone, blanks or not... many rules were broken, and someone died, to save about $500.00... Play safe,

I don't really have any useful input. Just in case anyone was wondering, the blank adapters that dale jenner is speaking of is used to allow blow-back in the chamber of the weapon so it ejects the shell. Without it, the round would go off but the weapon would not recycle a new round. The Grifter....a fountain of useless information. |

Again I am curious to know where I can get these adapters. Was there ever anyone prosecuted for Brandon Lee's death? Everything I have every read points to a blatant case of negligence. |

I am unsure if there were criminal charges brought up, but I believe there was a $$$ settlement... I have done two shows with Shannon, his sister, and both movies involved big gunplay scenes... I think one is still on cable "High Voltage". As for the adaptors, check with a gunsmith, most weapons handlers have done their own modifications, or have a gunsmith that they use, if you do it wrong, the weapon can come apart... THAT WOULD SUCK!!!Play safe, Nick |

Jack, this is an FAQ if I ever saw one. There are many sites on the net that sell blanks and the guns that shoot them (relatively cheap if you ask me). Personally I would check into them before I thought about getting a weapon modified or making blanks. My god, the spelling here is atrocious!!! (Note atrocious is spelled correctly. I had to look it up!) ------------------ Another quality NIKE comment
