As you may or may not know, I am making an action-oriented Vietnam war movie. I've got solutions for most of my special effects difficulties, and I have even begun training my German Shepherd to act. But I still have a problem: The script. It was all going well until I realized I was running out of ideas. I decided that it would be nice to incorporate facts into the movie, except for one little other problem: I know about little, if any events that occured during the war, much less anything about those events. So, does anyone know anything about the Vietnam war so that I could put an action-packed scene into my movie based on an actual event? Anything at all would be a real help. thanx, therave

Ok like you i know a little but her is some interesting stuff:since the vietcong liked to use the jungle to hide so much, a general buldozed a section of jungle before going in and since there was no jungle the vietcong did poorly and lost the battle about some other things: they often hid in underground tunnels and popped up opening fire on us soldiers. in torture they would shove bamboo shoots inbetween ppls fingernails they would also cut off fingers with thin string very slowly one last thing they filled bamboo shoots with poop and put them on a spring loaded mechanism when soldiers set the trap off in shoved the shoots in them and spread desease throug the infections caused by the crap hope this helps =) |

Watch Vietnam movies... Watch Platoon for what the average day was like for a US soldier, the Green Berets for some torture techniques, etc., the Deer Hunter for psychological effects it had on the soldiers, Good Morning Vietnam for some inside looks at other aspects of Vietnam, and Apocolypse Now for a very creative take on Vietnam. Remember, though, Hollywood tends to blow things up a lot, and even propogandise (i.e. the Green Berets) - which distorts the truth a bit. Ask someone who was really in Vietnam.. if you don't know anyone, then there are plenty of Vet hospitals, etc., or call the American Legion. Go to the library! Get as much research as you can... From what I know, Vietnam had more impact on our boys than just about any other conflict... Make sure you research good, because if you went through that kind of Hell, only to come home and watch some schlock amateur movie maker's attempt to glorify/make a buck or two off of it, then you probably wouldn't feel very good about yourself or your country. Nothing personal, of course, but I've seen a couple of Zombies in Vietnam movies that probably have thousands of American heroes spinning in their graves. At ease, men! -Jake, the 15 year old who prolly don't know what he's talking about=) |

ultra-low budget filmaking probably prohibits you from pulling off an actual war, so it's probably best pulled off with one or two soldiers in a fox hole or something, anticipating their last moments of life. Sound FX cds can go a heck of a long way, and most of them include great helicopters and munitions sounds. Look for stories told by people who were there, and go for the intimate details. |

They used a lot of traps with feaces and bamboo spikes, they were called punji sticks, they would dig pits stick them inside and cover it with sticks. They would stick some pointing up so when you fall in you get impaled and some sticking downwards so when you try to get out you get stuck. The viet cong had a lot of nasty tricks. get a book theres just to many to tel you about. And dont forget it wasent just the americans there, the australians were too. (and a few brits) Dale Jenner |

Don't mean to be an @ss but, Robotic dream... Who are you to tell this person what his budget allows and won't allow? |

True, Gore Master....I have made the assumption that most of us here don't have the money or resources available to pull of complex FX shots. I've come to this conclusion after reading many of the posts by the members, and in Theraves's case, his insufficient funds to afford an animal wrangler. In this case, I may or may not be wrong, but I have seen too many ambitious projects (including my own) fail for lack of focus on what was to be accomplished. If its a demo reel, or a test film, great! Extract from the movie as many good shots as you can pull off, and you'll have an excellent reel. If it's a compelling story that is supposed to suspend disbelief (which a good period-piece Vietnam movie should be), then I'd focus all my budget on getting a couple good actors, a good story, and the personnel to pull it off. Good luck, my friends |
