First let me say thanks for the reply's regarding my quesion of creating nose bleeding.
I have another fx sequence I have a question on. How would fx artists here go about this shot: A guy is mourning over a cross shaped gravestone which lays planted in the ground. Suddenly blood drenched rotten hands reach up through the stone and grab the actor and pull his face toward the stone. How in the world am I going to accomplish this? I want the gravestone to look real, how will it be done and then I need someone under the stone in the ground etc..Please pass me any and all idea's regarding how you all would go about accomplishing this scene in detail. This will be one of the first fx sequences we do and I want some imput on how to get it done and make it look realistic.
Thanks again for the help on my last post!

make the stone out of hard foam and have it cut so it will break apart at the right places. painted Foam works really good for gravestone texture. If you don't think foam will do the trick you could also try drywall.

I don't know just throwing out ideas

Well, if you can't do it right, improvise!

If you will please check out my webpage @

Good luck and have fun,

Okay, this won't give you blood drenched hands but it would probably look way cool. Use a foam headstone and cut out a hole big enough for hands to go through Then take Dentaplex (A VERY THIN STRETCHY latex) and cover the hole and paint it to match the headstone. When the hands come through it will look like the stone stretches. I saw this at a haunted house about two years ago and it was a wicked effect. I asked the owner how it was done and that's what he told me. He said you can get the material at most special effects supply companies but I've never looked. Sorry if this didn't help and just frustrated you.

Frist you'll need an artist to carve the headstone out of styrofoam and paint it.
Next drill two 4" holes runing at an angle thru the headstone, place 4" PVC down the holes next run a rod thru the end mounts of pneumatic cylinders (one on each side) and hide the hoses.
mount latex arms and hands to the pneumatic rods and cover with blood or whatever.
This is good for side shots and if the front of the headstone is in the shot just add some debris in the hole and seal off the front.
Adjust the PSI to bring the hands out at the rate you're looking for.
