Are there any foley artists out there who have any tips on how to get that meaty hollywood punch sound? You know, that completely inacurrate sound that the human body makes in a movie when its hit by a fist or a foot.

I'm working on this same problem right now. The ones I have recorded myself have so far sounded very unimpressive. For the sake of getting my current project done, I downloaded a .wav sample from Soundamerica.com (free and legal) and imported it into Sound Forge. I then converted it to 16-bit 44.1k (to work with my audio post program), equalized it a little bit (pushed up the bass) and added a touch of small-room reverb (since the sample cuts off so abruptly, it needed more ambiance to be believable). It is a little too slap-like, kind of trebly, but it actually fits for what I'm doing. The moral of the story however is: If you can't record it yourself, look for free sounds on the net, and be prepared to alter them so they fit what you need.

P.S. If someone has any tips for recording original punching sounds however, I'm just as interested in hearing them.

I would think for a punch "Hollywood-style" you would have to add sounds together. One for the meaty sound, one for the bang, etc.

You were on the right track when you asked for "that meaty Hollywood punch sound".. They hit MEAT and record it... I know, but I was in a session a while back and they were slapping and punching a big roast for the sound!

Good luck,

Nick

Really? I started wondering that after I posted above. Heh-heh. Did they add any other sounds with it? sounds like it needs something more. I could be wrong though.

Nope, they just played with it a little and then inserted the sound...

Good Luck,

Lots of times (I don't know about big hollywood films), but what they do is have the puncher holding the guy by the collar of his shirt and with his other hand he punches at the guys face but instead of hitting his face, he hits the palm of the hand thats holding the collar. With the right camera angle, it will look like he hit the guys jaw and you also get the punching sound. Do this if your not editing on computer. hope it helps.
