I just purchased a new Sony digital camcorder and the tech rep at Sony told me that "IN THERE TESTS there was no visable difference between using a standard 8mm tape and a Hi 8 (or digital 8) tape for recording digital information." This makes sense to me since we are not recording analog data just digital information. So, I guess what you would look for is the longevity of a tape. I was wondering what, if any, difference there is between the 8mm data tapes that you use (which do work in my camcorder) to store data and the 8mm or Hi 8 video tapes - does it make a difference if all I am storing is digital information? Is one tape more abbrasive than the other, will I risk damage to the heads in my camcorder if I use a 8MM, 2.3 Gb, 112M, data cert. tape (even if they are more expensive than the audio tapes)? I know we have had very good life from our 8MM, data cert. tapes here at work and would feel at ease using them in my camcorder - if they won't do any damage to the heads? Any insight here is greatly appreciated. |

Well....tape by nature is non abrasive....except for cleaning tapes ( DON't USE BTW ) There should be no diference with Data tapes. I work with a lot of different tape formats (no t any data tapes )but I have worked with dat, beta, vhs,Digital beta, D2 ect... and they are all different but none are abrasive.8mm tape is used for a lot of different applications, 8mm video, data storage, DA-88 ( 8 track digital audio recording ), Digital 8mm , ect. They sell different tape stock for each of these applications. For instance Hi8 stock is better quality tape than regualar 8mm stock. So you may want to try using the most expensive stuff you can come accross...it will usually give the best results. hope this helps. I thought they sold "DV" tapes for DV camcorders. Am I wrong? If not, I'd suggest DV tapes. | |
