For those of you who didnt have rich folks to give em free video gear and worship your camera too much to just shake it senselessly, here's an alternative contraption to make. It is especially useful for earthquake shots.

Ingredients:

- 1 x mirror, not weighing too much about 30 x 30 cm's

- 4 x thick strong rubber bands
- a frame or strong cardboard box with an opening about the length of your elastic bands larger than the mirror on each side.
- 4 x hooks - the type with a double adhesive sticky tihng on the back so you can just stick it on the mirror.
- 4 x ice cream/block sticks

Recipe:
- Stick a hook on each of the corners of the mirror
- make a hole on each corner of the carboard box entrance about 2 -3 inches in.
- put an elastic halfway through each of the holes
- on the outside of the box place the ice cream stick through the elastic and pull the elastic through on the inside. (the ice cream stick will be used to prevent the elastic from gong in all the way)
- attach an elastic fromt he box corner to the hook on the matching corner on the mirror

once the whole mirror is set up in the box, you can give it a little nidge and it will start to shake and wobble in a very natural way.
On an angle film the mirror close enough to not get any edges and an angle where your camera is not visible.

Interesting idea.

I know what you mean about treasuring your gear.

One thing though about your "shake-a-matic", surely the image is reversed?

you can always mirror it and get it to look right in post production.
Takes a few clicks to do it in Premiere and After Effects...

If you've got that sort of gear,
Can't the earthquake effect be done in after effects? Perhaps by offsetting every other frame a few pixels.

I'm no cgi expert but I know this could be done in Photoshop.

as i mentioned because of the real factor of the gizmo it will give a more smoother realistic look than anything which a bunch of code can generate.

and considering this is a low budget forum, not everyone has the money to buy a copy of after effects anyway

But the original "low tech" idea of yours presumes that the user doesn't have After effects because of it being expensive. Again you still need to reverse the shot, but if you ain't got AE????

Could you use another mirror to re-reverse the shot(like a periscope)

Use a small mirror close to the lens just to reflect the image in your larger "shake-o-matic.

yeah true

good diea about the second mirror.

i only used it for a shot of the cityscape shaking so it didnt really matter much about the mirroring thing.

But a second mirror would apply perfectl or this effect.

I'd be interested to know what sort of movies you like making. Do you mainly use "in camera" effects?
