For a movie I want to show the spedomiter of my car going 200+ k/ph. Now, I thought maybe I could take my car to a nice long strech of road... no I don't want to do that. What would be an easy way to show it accellerate (with the camera only showing hte spedomitor) smoothly from 0 - 200? It has to look realistic, and i really dont want my car going 200 kph =) |

Disconnect the speedometer and hook it to an electric drill. I did that once...I dunno how fast it goes, but oh well...Isaiah [This message has been edited by Prism (edited 05-27-2000).] |

Sorry to go on about Max again but you could do it very easily in that.Simply take on frame in Photoshop and cout the needle part out to a black background. Apply this map to a thin box or patch and then apply the map as a transparency map too.(sorry, I thinks that should be a black and white negative of the map) lay another box beneath that covering the real needle in the video footage and map that to the background. than simply rotate the needle/patch with keyframed animation. Hope that helps keep the fuel bill down Chimp |

Flooring it on a jacked up car certainly holds a variety of dangers and potential for damage. Safer and completely under your control: Junk yard.
Dash Board. Even cheaper if you offer to yank it out of the junker car yourself. Activate it mechanically, electrically, or just disassemble the odometer and gut it, attach the needle to a long rod, reassemble only the part that shows through the dash and move it directly by hand during the filming for precise movement at the exact speed you want. ------------------ Jeff F - Magic and FX Amazing the Masses [This message has been edited by Jeff F (edited 05-28-2000).] |

Most speedometers are set up for 1000 RPM input being 60 MPH, or about 100KPH. Most electric drills run at upto 2500 RPM. That would take care of the speed you need. Or you could do the effect in photoshop, after effects, or Multimedia studio. Don't jack the car up, that is asking to tear things up, includeing yourself.------------------ Rex Winfrey Critter Creation Shop

I agree, don't jack it. Too dangerous. Try the drill. (If you really want to go to that much trouble..remember how you took it apart, so you can put it back when you're done!)Isaiah ------------------ Hilarem datorem diligit Deus |

Get a speedo from a junk yard, rig it so you can move the dial manualy. To add realism for the shot, suggest vibration by shaking the camera or speedo.------------------ I Thank You |

I totally agree with the previous post. Don't wreck a car that ain't wrecked (If it's fixed, don't broke it?). Parts are cheap. You could disconnect the cable entirely, fix an electric motor to the speed-o, and use a rheostat to control the "Speed". |

there used to be devices in mechanics shops that allowed cars to be driven at speed without moving... haven't seen one in a while... but look around or call a mechanic |
