Is there any way to simulate this effect on a low budget? I mean like jumping accross a building and then landing on the roof of another and then make the roof kinda break around your feet from the impact. I was thinkin maybe benny could make a tutorial or something, he's good we these sorta things. |

Ask CyberSmyth, he was nominated for best SFX on the ZDTV 2nd Annual Camfest. He did the exact effect you're talking about except the actor was jumping from the ground to the roof of a tall building. It was cool looking. ------------------ Visit JACKSLOAN.COM Because bananas taste delicious. |

first off, there are like 3 or 4 cuts in there. uh, its prety simple...bluescreening, some small platforms and some background footage build 2 small platforms, that look like your building tops, film the actor jumping against a bluescreen. make the top of one of those platforms out of something like drywall with a layer of plywood a couple of inches below that so you dont jump all the way through. film the actor landing on that, then film him running and jumping off the other...combine all of them in premiere (or whatever you have)
that's how i'd do it later TOm |

Noah'z Grafik ark: I think i would suggest a similar approach to the one crazy lou mentioned. You could make it in 3 cuts: Take off - flying/jumping thru air - landing.
- Take off - Film the actor against a green screen from the front, jumping as if he/she was jumping off the buidling - use some background photage of a edge of a building and compose those together.
- Thru the air - Film the actor against a green screen this time maybe from the side and compose with live photage of real buildings or maybe use the method Crazy lou described.
- Landing - Again, use the method Crazy lou decribed and maybe put some flour or similar on the box to get some dust when he lands to make the impact look harder - compose with live photage.
I think that should work well I hope this helps or gives you some new ideas. ------------------ .Benny. .CGI & Film Director. .Taurus Filmproductions. http://taurusfilmprod.hollywood.com/ Email me: C_Keeper@hotmail.com [This message has been edited by Benny (edited 05-24-2000).] |

For the air cut.. Film the actor against a green screen somthing like this The distance between the two boxes dont have to be to much you can add some slowmotion in post-production. And then film a background plate, or make it CGI if you want, and make it a long image wich you can pan using software like Premiere, After Effect kind of like this now the red square shows how much of the image wich will be seen at the same time - now as the actor jumps in the green-screen shot - pan the background making it appear as if the actor was jumping longer then he does and lands on the other side. Did that make sense? ------------------ .Benny. .CGI & Film Director. .Taurus Filmproductions. http://taurusfilmprod.hollywood.com/ Email me: C_Keeper@hotmail.com [This message has been edited by Benny (edited 05-24-2000).] |

Yes I understand what you were saying now benny thanks a lot, im new to premeire and after effects so can you tell me how to only choose a section of it and then pan out. and how would i do this if i wanted the background to move. so the clouds move and stuff. |

the simple way would be to pan while shooting the background footage, then just capture the clip and play it normally. later TOm |

I agree with Crazy lou ~ pan while you shoot the photage of live buildings. CGI is a solution ~ but a complex one if you have never used a 3D program before, however Bryce3D is quite easy to learn and might be a possible solution, but again, i think live photage is the best one You could also shoot a live background of a sky and add some CGI buildings. And you can do it the other way around ~ film real buildings and add CGI elements. Just a few suggestions, i hope they help ------------------ .Benny. .CGI & Film Director. .Taurus Filmproductions. http://taurusfilmprod.hollywood.com/ Email me: C_Keeper@hotmail.com [This message has been edited by Benny (edited 05-25-2000).] |

if i pan out on the background and then insert the footage of the guy jumping on greenscreen wouldn't the guy look really big and wouldn't the jump look really small? |

Noah'z Grafik ark: Take a look at this clip. Its a clip wich illustrates the method described above. I used the images from my previous post. It's a one second, AVI clip of what it would look like if you use the method above. Got any more questions, ask away Heres the clip: http://www7.ewebcity.com/magicalkingdom/jump.avi Note: that the "actor" is in the almost exact same place while i pan the background and it appears as if the jump was longer than it actually is ------------------ .Benny. .CGI & Film Director. .Taurus Filmproductions. http://taurusfilmprod.hollywood.com/ Email me: C_Keeper@hotmail.com [This message has been edited by Benny (edited 05-25-2000).] |

hmm....maybe he wants to do it like it actually was in the matrix, with his actor jumping away form the camera in the foreground, a far distance to the background?------------------ What is purple and hums? An electric grape. |

I get it now. With the panning do you shoot the whole thing and then using some effect add the panning in or do you shoot moving the camera in a straight line. and does anyone know how i would be able to film the roofs of buildings, i live in NYC, manhattan and also have a house in conn. or is there some stock footage somewhere which i could download? |

This place might have some stock photage, but i am not sure: http://www.artbeatswebtools.com/ You can ie. shoot while moving the camera ..or.. add pan later, its up to you. Use the method you think is the easiest.

If your going to add the pan later I would suggest you use a still, film camera to get a few good shots. Then get a good hi-res scan of it to use it in the pan. You might even be able to find some good post cards that you can use, look to get something with a good bit of detail. And of course there is always making the city in CG. Good chance you can get some good city models at 3D Cafe. Also, don't underestemate the use of shaking the camera. When your actor hits the ground shake the footage for a second or two. I did it in post, just have it move up, down, left and right radomly. It'll looks like he hit the ground hard. And thanx Sloan! [This message has been edited by CyberSmYth (edited 05-26-2000).] |

I submitted it to TheForce.Net two weeks ago, and I'm still waiting for them to say anything about it. Until they give me a yes or no, I don't want to release it just yet.Update: Looks like they like it, and might host it, but no final word yet...
