http://www.hollywoodedge.com has some good ones but they only have like 20 free ones.

I think that "Hollywood quality" sound effects are out of place in an amateur production. See what you can come up with on your own. You probably have everything you need, lying around your house/in your garage/under your bed to make all the cool sound effects you could ask for. Be creative.
Sorry, I don't know where to get sound effects..I never look for them because I try to put as much of my own stuff in my creations as possible. Have fun!

Prism's right. You could go and rent stock effects from hollywood production houses, but thats probably not worth the time or money. Be creative and make your own. Better experience that way.

I hate you Hitch!

quote:

I will assume you meant this in jest and not for real. However, understand that if you DID mean it for real, this kind of thing ISN'T going to happen here. You may not like his ideas or thought processes but it's NO reason to attack someone personally. YOU WILL BE WATCHED for any future issues like this and if need be you can easily be suspended from these boards. But then I trust your comment was just a joke. But an emoticon or an LOL or some other indication might have been in order just so we'd know it was only a joke. Step lightly.

Do it yourself! That way, you KNOW something, instead of having to rely on someone else every time you want a sound effect.

There's a store near where I live called Half Price books. They sometimes have these CDs that have 200+ sound effects each. VERY cool. Check your local CD store, they might have them.

Gun shots -

Easily done with a party popper (Do you get them over there)

You know those little cannon things full of streamers for parties. You pull the string and it sprays streamers out the front.
They are about a couple of quid a box.

Use a mic and e.q. with plenty of bass.(slow it down a bit and it sounds fine)

p.s. (Hitch - I dont hate you if thats any consolation )

A good sound engineer knows that equalization is about shaping the sound. Don't think about what your sound is missing (i.e. boosting the bass way up), think about what it has too much of..Bass, for example! Too much bass can make too much of a "thump" and when we hear a gunshot, we want a "BLAM!"..it's the mid frequencies which are so important to equalize. Just thought I'd mention that.
Also, if you must slow down your audio clips, remember to record them at a fast speed/high sample rate. When you slow down an audio clip that has been recorded at a low speed/sample rate then the quality is diminished even more when it is slowed down.

Prism,

SE'd for 3 1/2 years in local studio, been recording for 10.
Believe me, if you dont add that bass when you are running the sound back on to tape/disc then you will get a slow sounding party popper.
Essentially though you are right over E.Q.ing is probably the fastest way to ruin an otherwise good recording.

Hey, that's swell! I agree...but *too much* bass can, like you said - ruin an otherwise good recording. Remember, I said a "good sound engineer knows that equalization is about shaping the sound"..I didn't say anyone was wrong! Trouble is, most people don't even own a half-decent mic. Cheap mics always have bad frequency response, and a low SPL. I'd like to talk to you more about recording engineering. That's something I'd be interested in. I've got two friends who are audio engineers. One works in a studio, and on the road...and the other is a retired electrical engineer (he's in his 70s I believe)...they're both incredibly smart, and have shared a lot of knowledge with me. My disadvantage is that I have little experience with hands-on recording & such. After I get out of high school then I will have time to learn this stuff...so, until then...

Thanks,
Isaiah

Do what I did offer to help out at a local studio. It worked for me. I got a job in the local studio when I left school as a trainee engineer and then later got in doing session work (drums...again).
You can learn so much just sitting in there watching. If you have any spare time from filming and study you should have a look. Most places are happy to let you sit in.

Yeah...I've heard so many success stories where some aspiring young kid makes amateur recordings at home, then moves on and ends up working in a big 48 track studio. Cool stuff. I have a friend in Florida who lives next door to a radio station and he tells me that in FLA, you need an electrical engineering degree to become an audio engineer...?? I don't want to believe that, at least not for Washington (where I live) because my brain wasn't made for that kind of stuff! I'm an artist! Although I do have a fairly good understanding of certain things - resistance, impedance, polarity, out-of-phase speakers, etc., I am not about to go learning how to make electrical circuits. To me, that is incomprehensible.

The first guy I mentioned - his name is Dave Howe. He's an audio engineer for a local blues band, Mumbo Jumbo. I got one of their MP3s, and it is QUITE exceptional. Of course, these guys are professional (middle-aged, too. ) but I would have never expected such a great sound from a local artist. One studio which has my interest is Malta Records, located here in Spokane...it's owned by a guy named Don Emerson, a very successful recording artist who apparently hit it big in Europe! Anyway, my friend Dave was thinking of getting hooked up with him so I could tag along. (The blues band plays mainly in bars, where minors such as myself are not allowed, whereas Don Emerson's audience is for all ages.)

Anyway, that's what happening. Think I've got a good start? I'd love some ideas. I am going to get a job so I can set up a home recording studio. I have my eye on the Tascam 488 MKII. I'll probably get a used one because they're SO much cheaper that way.

Guns? Easy! Use party poppers, but try in a big pot. Try any explosive toys! Forget Oc***'s Razor. Use the most complex, weird things you can come up with. Who would have expected an engine noise to have been done with a razor and a salad bowl, or a blaster with a radio antenna support wire?

When I was at the studio?
Not doing that any more stopped a few years beck when the studio closed (bummer)

For SE i was on about £120 a week that would have been (ummm...counting..)7 years ago. For session work I got £40 for turning up then £20 an hour.

Don't know what that is in dollars but I know that you get more nowadays.(inflation)
