I was looking at a new good super 8 camera for about 500 bucks. If I were to make a one hour movie with that on Super 8 film. About how much wouuld that run me in cost. What I would like to do is shoot in super 8, transfer what i fimled to mini dv. Then edit on computer, then put back to mini dv. How much would I be looking at. I have all the editing stuff and a mini dv camera. I just want to know about film cost.

THANKS!!!!

Although Super 8 looks better than DV to me, it costs more to process. Super 8 cartridges cost from $12-$16 a piece. Processing would be $12-$16 per roll. Figure your shooting ratio to be 3 to 1. If you feel ambitious go 2 to 1. You will need 2-3 hours worth of film. Each cartridge at about 1 1/2 minute. You need 120-180 minutes of film. Thats about 80-120 rolls. I would imagine you also want the film transferred to DV. Not sure exactly what that would cost, but I think that is about $3.00 per roll.

As you can see this adds up big time. If you are gonna shoot Super 8, I would not want the end product to be DV. You can blow it up to 16 mm which is another major expense.

Honestly you would truly be better off shooting 16 mm from the get go. Definately the cheapest route is to shoot DV, but obviously you want that film look. Hope you have a cash cow for this project. Good Luck.

I have two Super8 cameras (so far). They are both very good machines; one cost me $6.00 the other cost me $10.00. I wouldn't go overboard with the camera unless you get ALL the bells and whistles. I'd pay UP TO $200 for one with sound, slo-mo, single frame, and manual exposure control. $500 is a might steep... you could get a 16mm Bolex for that.

Also, if you rehearse (actors and camera moves) like crazy, your shooting ratio can drop a lot!

Those price quotes are fairly accurate. I pay between $17-21 Canadian for a 3 minute roll of Ektachrome, but I save shipping costs because I work a half block from where it's processed.

Don't forget student discounts at Kodak.
And $500 is WAY steep for anything but a Beaulieu. I just sold a Nikon R10 not too long ago for $250ish. These are really good little cameras.
And just as an aside, anyone used a Bolex DS8 camera? That 100 foot capacity seems cool...

For $500 I would go to ebay and bid on a Canon 1014. It's worth it if it's in good condition.

weekend- you live in la, where the film can be bought and processed for cheap. you can get 9 something for plus and tri x (b&W) and 11 for ectachrome. we sent it to super 8 sound in burbank for the b&w and yale labs for the ectachrome- processing is 10-11 per roll. i think these prices are all available to you as a student (try the suggested kodak discounts) one warning about yale labs- they screen all super 8 film and literally throw out any film that contains "questionable" material- from violence to sex to whatever they don't feel like giving you back. they have scratched, lost, bent, and damaged film for almost everyone i know at one point or another- use another lab if you can afford to. i personally think ectachrome looks like crap, so i would recommend the plus x stock anyway- you need more light with it, but it gives great results. the tri-x is a little grainy, and i personally hate it, but some people love the way it looks. also, super-8 sound sells kodak 16mm stocks in super8 cartridges- not really worth the price if you ask me because you need to get it printed (in fact i think they give you a video print- they don't have any way to print super8 film at that store as far as i know). the info is on the web at http://www.super8sound.com/

oh, here's a good link: http://www.lamotionpictures.com/labs/labs.html

a good cheap transfer is to project it onto white posterboard and video tape that- it looks pretty good, but there are places in la that will transfer super8, i don't think anyone can do it to dv though. if you find someone who does transfer to dvcam or minidv, i'd be interested- let me know!

to transfer the 8 film to dv cheaply what i do is just project the film on to the screen and film the dv right as the film is projecting....

ok the BEST deal on super8 film is $18.44 for a 50ft role and that INCLUDES PROCESSING FEES!! It has a small pre-addressed mailer that you simply insert the spent catridge in and drop in the mail to have it developed.

If you buy 5, the price is $17.47 each (with processing)

If you buy 40, the prive is $16.72 each (with proccessing)

Nick Jade,

"so is super 8 better than digital?"

Buy a copy of Bleak Future from http://www.anarchy101.com/ and judge for yourself.

BTW, please don't judge super 8 by the sound of Bleak Future. It really sucks. Apparently they used the single system super 8 sound that Kodak no longer supports. If you distribute on video the sound can be much better than that.
