how could i create an effect like this, having a bullet go really slow blasting through different objects, could this be done with the bullet and objects blowing up in cgj which would be composited over a regular background. Would that work? and if so how could i create the cgi stuff in either lightwave or 3d max studio, im very new to both programs so please help me out here

Yes you can do that in CGI if you want to but it does involve alot of work and you can use ie. Lighwave or Max if you want to.
What you need to do is first create meshes of the stuff you want to blow up - be it a vase, glass, lamps or what ever you were thinking of letting the bullet pass thru.
Second creat a virtual environment roughly looking like the room in wich the CGI was shot, place the meshes where you want them to stand in the environment and add the mesh of the bullet.
Animate this over time and let the bullet pass thru the objects and let them blow up.
Depending on approach but you can let a displacement map or plugin blow up the meshes and add some particles as well to create the effect of debri.
Compose with the live shot and you got the effect

This is just roughly how you could go about doing the effect, need more in-depth information just drop me a line

Didn't they really shoot it and then add the CG bullet? I'm not sayin you should do it, Noah'z, but I thought that was how they did it.

Do you seriously think they would put Jonathan Davis aka Mr Pretty boy sissy dont hurt me, within 20 metres of a gun and have the possibility to break a fingernail on him? the label would lose their entire 12 year old audience.

Hehe, the 12 year old audience part is true, but I'm talkin about the shots where the bullet is just going through all the various items, like the whip cream and water jug, whereas the shots with the bullet anywhere near Jon were CGI

Well they probably broke the whiped cream can and the water jug with small explosives (could be somthing else for the water jug) and composited them in with the actors (they would not want to get with in feet of an exploading can of whiped cream trust me) and added in the bullet in post. Putting in the bullet is easy but will take a fair amount of time you would need a 3d animation program and photoshop you just run the bullet through the live action (this is the easy part) and then take that into photoshop with the origional live action and the live action cg put the live action and cg on layer1 and origional on 2 when you want the bullet to dissapear behind somthing just erase layer1 and you will see layer2 behind and it will look like it is going behind (not really ard but will take a while). BTW if you are asking because you want to do the effect don't bother. BTW if you actually want to do this effect go with benny's 3D whiped cream idea don't want to be reading the paper and read somthing about a guy blowing his head off trying to blow up a can of whiped cream.(this is a really stupid way to die) :-)

Im pretty sure they used still shots for the background and then added the item they were going to blow up in with cgi, but i havent seen the video in almost a year so im not sure. It seems like that would be the easiest way.

Benny's advice is safest I think.
He's right Max has a standard explosion built in. Try it in both programs and see what comes out.
